No pistols, no semi automatic rifles, no pump action shotguns.

Semi automatic shotguns are allowed, but if you want to use one on a Game Shoot, it is always polite to ask first and only load 2 cartridges. They are common where people have Rhumatism or shoulder injuries, but like to keep shooting. I think they are limited to 4 cartridges under our Laws. Ask Dave H, he will know for certain.

It is ill-legal to own any type of handgun in the UK unless you have exceptional circumstances to need one [humane despatch being about the only reason, and then you really have to argue your case]

Semi-auto [and pump] shotguns are permitted on a shotgun certificate, as long as the weapon can only hold a maximum of 3 rounds [two in magazine, one in chamber]. You can have greater capacity weapons, but you then need a firearms certificate, [and need to provide good reason for owning one]

Semi auto rifles are also ill-legal except for weapons chambered for the .22 rimfire round.

Offence to shoot game species with a semi-auto [or pump].

Any weapon capable of holding more than 2 cartridges is a no-no under various regs [Game act, W+C act, etc] although many do so, it seems to be one of those legal areas often overlooked

Aha! At last, I've found a topic where chris might be less than right!

What about .22" semi-automatic rifles?

And .22 pistols?

And pistols for which ammunion is "no longer readily available" ?

BOTH pump action and semi-auto shotguns are quite legal, if limited to 3 rounds. And, I think, if you are in a gun club and your discipline is "tactical shotgun" you can get a pump-action with more than 3 rounds AND use ball ammunition.

Sorry Chris, but it's not often that I get to trump you! :D

PS: A Stalker recently managed to get a licence for a pistol on the grounds that he needed to carry it for his job. It's not quite a total ban.

I used to have a .22 pistol (two of them in fact). Despite being a member of a target shooting club I was forced to surrender them when the ban came into effect. So my dreams of joining the Olympic team were immediately just that, despite having earned a marksman's badge when I was in the army.

I then purchased a .22 semi-automatic rifle to use at the target shooting club. Unfortunately all the red tape which was involved with owning this made me sell it after about a year.

That's why I said to ask Dave, Nick. I thought it was 4 cartridges.

The shoots on farms in ( better not say ;) ) used to let the guns use a semi automatic if they had injuries to their shoulders or arthritis, etc as long as they asked first and the other guns agreed. As they were all friends who shot at each others farms and had clay days as well, they didn't bother too much.

I think people started bringing in 7-shot pump actions, imported from the US and this led to a restriction of 5 cartridges in a chamber. In the late 70s or early 80s the limit went down to 3.

Mossberg was a big name, IIRC.

I thought you could use pump action and semi-auto shotguns on game, as long as they were restricted to 3 shots. Certainly they're not quite the thing unless one has a good excuse (as per your friends). I may be wrong.

I'm afraid I'm a terrible snob. I tease the guns who turn up with O/Us on our shoots, even though I have one for duck and clays!

They would only allow 2 cartridges, Nick, so they weren't unsporting and slip a sly shot in.
It was just so the action took the recoil, not the shoulder and they could carry on with thier shooting. Nothing more sinister.

Went clay pigeon shooting in April and we used both pump action and semi-automatic guns. The pump action has the unfortunate effect of causing you to speak in an Austrian accent.

I'll be back.

A mate of mine had his semi auto dropped from a 5 to a 3 shot as a result of Mike Ryans efforts in Hungerford.

When will people realise that guns don't kill people,
people kill people
