my mate has a defender that is have it motor put back in can you tell do you have to take the gearbox out to put the motor back in

No.

You need to take the gearbox tunnel up though to get to the bell housing bolts.

In that case, it's probably easier to take the gearbox out. Saves taking all the trim out. :)
