So what do people think of the V6 reliability?
Thinking of getting one to replace my TD4 (had a few issues which has shaken my faith in the car) also getting tempted by the V6 rumble! :D

Apart from the cost of replacing the 3 timing belts, as a timing lock/remover set costs around £300, the only problems we have had is the Variable Intake System flaps coming apart.
Takes about an hour to change the manifold, but it is expensive.

so compared to the reliability/costs of a TD4 manual?

We just sell and service them plus a few repairs on the VIS. Generally they are reliable, the HDC wires break on the gearstick, but as I say, we don't see many back.
Running costs are a thing the other lads can tell you.
I personally think the engine is wrong for a Freelander, it's too quick. That is just my opinion though, so don't read too much into it.

James...Yove seen where mine gets to and admittedly had a fair bit of work done when I bought it (dodgy dealer didnt bother doing the things asked and tried to pull fast one) but apart from cost of protecting it (guards etc) and serviceing which so far Have done all myself Repairs have been ....I front gaiter and 2 rear diff mounts so cost next to nothing as both caught very early before causing further problems.
Like all motors you will get good and bad same as you will drivers...If your buying a used one buy the best you can get...have it properly inspected and get a decent warranty.

right definatley thinking of this, although the fuel consumption of my TD4 is hard to ebay - I have done 612 miles since teh last fill up with around a 1/9 of teh tank left :D

Bought a 2001 `Y`V6 GS in May 2004 with 14k on clock, now done 35k..its a second car and lightly used..and has never given a minutes bother. I`ve never towed with it although it has a towbar and twin electrics and its never pushed although it cruises happily on the motorway at illegal speeds so maybe its not a good example to compare reliability.
Its a great car even in GS trim..it doesn`t have leather but does have a/c and all electrics including sunroof..and as said its smooth and fast, gives a lot of people a surprise.
Its so good that I`m looking to replace it with a V6 HSE but they are like hens teeth..to make matters worse it has to be Black..swmbo!..but it looks like I will have to settle for a TD4 HSE Auto..
