:( Hi Ive got a w-reg freelander which has now got two different vibrations
1st. a noise which sounds like something winding down around 40 and 60 mph
2nd. at 4000 revs which sounds like its coming from the engine.
and heres the list of replacments so far.

new recommended tires all round
wheels balanced
prop shaft bearings replaced
IRD bracket and damper replaced
rear diff mounts
checked VC

No one seems to be able to pinpoint the problem including "main dealers"

Any help most welcome PLEASE

Assuming it does 4000 rpm, it's a petrol. 1.8 , listen for a noise behind the timing belt cover, they are prone for water pumps. If it's a V6 listen to the intake manifiold.

Usual test for Freelanders with vibrations is drop the VC and propshafts and see if it still makes the noise/vibration. Check the IRD oil colour.

Didn't happen to buy it from a Ann Summers sale rep?

Is it safe to drive like that to test as i suggested this to the main dealer garage and they didnt want to do it, mind you i had to tell them the bracket was broken four times before they actually checked and found it in three pieces.

will check the water pump when i pick it up tomorrow,
whats the syptoms of the ird unit failing???

It wil just run as a FWD car, we do it all the time tpo test them. A lot are sold like that to stop the vibrations, it's always worth looking underneath before you by one.

There is a lot going on in an IRD, bearings failing is the most common. Vibration and banging noises when you turn sharply or reverse on hard lock.

It was the tires and the wheel balancing, i had to take it to yet another garage and they had to stack the weights and replaced khumo tires with michelin synchrones and its solved it.
back to enjoying driving again

Hi!

I have the same problem with my freelander - TD4 02 reg. It vibrates the gear stick and through the throttle on accelaration. I have had the wheel alignment done and wheels balanced, it has improved it through the steering but still vibrates the gear stick etc. I have been advised that I need new tyres. Is it the type of tyre that may resolve this?
