Has any one else experienced patchy uneven rear tyre wear?
I own a Free Lander 18 5dr station wagon?
I have had weal alignment, balancing & Shocks, checked and they are all apparently OK.???
And if so, do you know if there is a fix?

I'd be looking at a potential fault with the viscous coupling. I believe some of the earlier ones wheren't so good.

Can you describe it more ? if you mean wear at the edges, particularly something called 'castellation' then it's pretty normal I'm afraid. Some early cars are worse due to the IRD gearing which got changed on later models, and some tyres are worse for it too.
If it's wear all over, or on the inside etc then I'd be looking at bearings etc too.

PS. LandRover changed the service bulletins to include swapping the rear tyres left to right in order to make them last longer since the castellation was such a problem !

Thank you all for you response.
Its recently had its 3yr service and only has 25 000 miles on the clock.
If there is a problem with the bearings or the viscous coupling could this have been missed during the service?
Description – The tire tread looks stepped / similar to backslash but not such a dramatic angle.
If it is “castellation” is there any permanent fix?
Thanks again
:yay:

That sounds like castellation, yes. Different tyres reduce it, but it can never be removed because of the way the drive-train works. The viscous coupling is tricky to test, and Land Rover say it can't be tested even (this isn't true ... it can be tested as mentioned it previous threads on here)
The only thing that can be done is swap them left to right before it gets too noisy, put them on the front before they are too bad then swap them around again for as long as you can get away with before buying new ones. That's just the way it is ! still better than my last car which needed new front tyres every 18k :)
