I have a 51 TD4 and the clutch is biting at the last inch of the pedal [near the floor]. Now logically this means the clutch is fine as it should be at the other end of the pedal [the top] if it was worn .... Shouldn't it?

Can you adjust the hydraulics on these? The little travel I have is causing slippage and I'm concerned about knackering the dual mass fly wheel :(

Check the fluid level, you can bleed a TD4 system. It uses a concentric slave cylinder, these fail quite regularly on VWs, BMWs and Rovers. The slippage could be fluid getting into the clutch, or the pressure plate diaphragm is collapsing, that also gives a low pedal.

Thanks, looks like I need the clutch replacing then ....

Been quoted £400 + VAT for the clutch, plate and slave so not too bad :)
