View Full Version : What else can go wrong?

I love my freelander but it seems to be doing it's best to bankrupt me in the 18 months I've had it :(

It's a 2000 xDi and I've just had to pay nearly £2000 to have a second hand engine fitted as on a trip to Cardiff, a conrod snapped and punched a hole in the side of the engine block.

However, while this was being done, the guy told me that the viscous coupling had seized and damaged the transfer box (which explains the whine) and that I'm looking in the region of £1000 to have this done.

I've just had a little boy (#3!) so money is pretty damn tight at the moment so my question is, is this something that can wait a while? What are the pitfalls of me running it as is at the moment? Could this be why the conrod snapped?

Also, am I right in thinking it can be removed totally for a while and run as a 2WD? Thoughts on this option?

If it has to be done sooner rather than later, can anyone recommend somewhere in the Manchester\Stockport area that will do a good job for next to nowt (or at least not an extortionate amount of money ;-)

Cheers,
Smiffy.

Ouch. Now you've just managed to confirm that I am the unluckiest person ever when it comes to cars...

I borrowed my mum's car while my freelander was off the road and the head gasket went after 2 weeks which cost £600...then the alternator on it...exhaust....granted, it's old but until I had it, it was running fine and I don't drive them like rally cars, though my dad would disagree :)

I'm hoping the cost of that one is just because it's a diesel one as I still owe about double that on this one :)

I hate cars.

Or they hate me.

Same difference :)

Smiffy,
You aren't the only unlucky one mucker - I too was in Cardiff on holiday 2 weeks ago and my engine seized, The crankshaft snapped !!! So I know what u r feeling - Mine was 3 yrs old in July and 5 weeks outside its warranty !!!!! After bit of a fight, have managed to get Landrover to pay 67% towards new engine, as mine has just done 34k !
So instead of forking out £4400 i have to find £1900,

I just hope its all worth it.

Templ4r is a brill source and very knowkledgable,

Must be something about Cardiff !!!!!

You can run it as a 2wd, but only if the IRD or rear diff aren't damaged.

The IRD will still have to send drive through the reduction and mitre gears. If the bearings or teeth are damaged, it will bang and rattle or blow the casing. The rear diff will still turn the pinion.

You need to check the colour of the oil, if it's grey or silvery, you have metal in the oil.
