Well, all I can tell you, is my 2001 td4 has one!....
Its often called a "fuel-fired heater"....and its fully automatic.
Because of the efficency of the Diesel engine, it would take AGES for the engine to get upto "normal" running temp....so they added this heater, which heats the coolant, not the cabin!
If you stand in front of your FL, look at the bottom Right of the bumper, you should see a small pipe poking through the bumper....this is the exhaust of the heater. On newer motors, the Fuel fired heater was replaced by an electric heater(I think three "glow-plugs" were used to do the same job).
My heater failed to ignite a couple of times when the car was new....I thought th thing was going to explode!...SO much white smoke comming from the front of the car (from the "exhaust", hence I know where it is!)
Cant realy tell you anything else about it....sorry

Thanks for the above, but as always I have a few more questions.
When does it come on?
Do you have to service it?
How do I know its working?
Cheers
Andrew
When does it come on? As mentioned above it is an automatic system and will come on when the outside temperature is low ( 10c? I think).
Do you have to service it? No
How do I know its working? You won't really notice it from inside the car (except the water temp. gets up pretty quick). If you are outside you will hear it and probable notice exhaust fumes from the little exhaust pipe at the front. Also it has an automatic cooling cycle and will run on a bit once the vehicle is shut down.

It comes on at anything from 6-8 c it works via a sensor under the front bumper.
What you will notice when you switch on is smoke from the front near side of vehicle comming from a small exhaust pipe if the heater is fitted.
You can have an optional control fitted to make this heater warm the vehicle via a remote control. This can bring on the heater fans inside the vehicle and on a cold winters morning it's so nice to get into a warm vehicle that is defrosted while all your neighbours are still scraping there windscreens off.
Or if you are real posh you can have the timer fitted so as to set the heater to fire up at a specific time!!!!!!.
Heater does not need a service according to landrover.
It is a webasto water heater it also has the advantage of pre heating the water so reducing engine wear because the engine is allready at running temp.

Hi there, I have a 2005 TD4, with the heater, you will certainly know when its working, apart from the smoke, I nearly shat myself the first time it kicked in (no-one @ LR told me that it was fitted) and like a complete Tw++ I raced off down to the dealer explaining "This awful hissing noise", when they had stopped laughing and had dried their eyes they both showed me and told me what it was--I felt like a complete tit, mind you whenever I go to the dealer now, they certainly all know me and it seems to me I get prefferential treatment.
Top marks for James Edwards of Chester:):):):)
ps it really does make a huge difference on a cold and frosty morning (queue nursery rhyme)
Ah, happy days.
