A few weeks ago, had the chip within the ecu replaced (2000 Td5). Had previously considered the piggyback (draytek) approach but research and info on this forum persuaded me otherwise. Used to feel "trapped" in o/s lane when overtaking.
Car transformed, no great difference in fuel economy unless booted, but response for overtaking (inc joining motorways) and getting away at junctions greatly improved, which was the reason for the upgrade in the first place. Driven "normally", you wont notice much difference, but when needed, the extra torque helps.

I'm looking at getting mine remapped too (2004 TD5 Auto)
Having done lots and lots of reading through forums etc I am leaning toward TD5alive.
I spoke to the chap there (gary iirc) and he has assured me that the remap that he does, is bespoke to each vehicle rather than just uploading a pre written map that has been optimized for all vehicles. As far as i am aware, other respected tuners (i.e. JE Engineering) do not taylor the map to each individual car, although I may be completely wrong :)

Now he may be pulling the wool over my eyes, but he seems pretty sincere about his promise and I have only read positive remarks about his work.

Only problem for me is he is 150+ miles away, otherwise I would have had it done by now.
Yes he does a postal service, but this will then not be optimized to my own vehicle

Google TD5alive loads of people in DOC use him if you live to far away as i do you post him your ecu via recorded delivery and two days later its back.

Mine did 25mpg before the chip and still does 25mpg mixture of town and motorway work.

Smokebelch,
Go for it, TD5 Alive did my 2001 Td5, made it a different motor to drive. Had it remapped to around 170bhp, but if you have the money and the desire I believe it can be pushed to around 230bhp, too much for me.
I just wanted a little more torque for caravan towing and general driving.
The fuel consumption has not changed, still around 30/32 driven sensibly, a little less when towing........

Bear in mind that the journey back may not take as long as the journey there!

Hi Satan, Yours will be the square headlight model then (which I prefer). I very nearly got one (STi) myself a couple of years back and test drove a couple and bl**dy loved them. I opted for an Audi TT in the end and have slowly modded it up a little to 260 bhp with a remap - uprated DV, an air box mod and a sports haldex (Quatro up grade).
I still wonder if I did the right thing?

(Love my car tho face)

Drove a mates 1.8tt and was really impressed with it actually. Only to the pie shop and back, but flipping went like stink. I wanted an estate car so the impreza fitted quiet well :) Its the really early shape before the headlights went square.

Had my TD5 chipped by Gary of TD5 Alive whilst I was at Billing this year. I can certainly confirm that he maps it to your vehicle as I had three different re-maps over the course of about an hour before he was happy with the end result, also discovered my air flow meter was faulty whilst doing this.

Having now replaced the air flow meter and also fitted his EGR valve bypass kit the end result is just spot on. As others have already said mpg about the same but more power to pull away from junctions and overtake which just make it so much more fun to drive.:D

The only problem is I am now tempted to have a larger intercooler fitted.
