hi all.
the starter on my 95 300tdi seems very slow to turn over the engine,it starts alright but the starter seems as if it will die.
my question is....
do i fit a new starter,or could it be something else that is causing the problem?
halfords checked out the battery and alternator and they are both fine.
has anyone else had this problem?

by the way thanks for help on previous queries these have now been cured

could be worth cleaning the earth leads up. sure i read somwhere theres one to the inner wing and they corode causing bad earth. you could eliminate by running a good jump lead from the eath side of the batery straight to the body of the starter, see iff it makes a difference. alan......

I had the same problem on my 300TDI Auto, replaced the Battery with another 72 (ish) AH and it would only start when it had recently been charged. I got fed up with it so bought teh lagest battery that would fit in teh tray and it all works well now:). Im presuming that the 72 was a little tight on Amps (although it is the correct spec) and as all the system gets older the elec resitance has increased but im not a spark.

thanks you both for your help.i tried earthing the starter but it seems about the same,so i will pop along to the local landy dealer and see if it is turning slow or i am being a bit paranoid.
[had the same sort of problem on the work minibus that starter worked for about a year then packed up on a saturday night.]
might change the earth lead from the starter to the chasis as a gamble in case i was not getting a good contact.

not exactly landy, but my xantia starter did the same after it got wet(don't ask), the brush holders furred up and held the brushes off the armature, causing a lot of arcing , high current drain and slow running.
it's a thought if it's been damp:)
