If I brought a TD5 with air suspension and I wanted air occasionally to blow radiators out / inflate tyres / impact wrenches etc, would I be OK using the compressor, or would that ruin it?

If your talking about using the suspension compressor for doing anything other than keeping the rear springs working, forget it. It's a low capacity unit, known for it's unreliability. It struggles to last when all it has to do is keep air in the springs.

They are £250+ a go from LR. I've had two in 18 months, and I'm sure the current one is on it's way out. Biggest failing on this, my third LR. Consequently, it's likely to be my last :(:(:(

As Nomad says, the compressor pump is about the size of an eggcup and all it's work is put to trying to keep the suspension working. Having said that, it is up to the job if it works as it was designed to do, pump as and when needed, not full time because of leaks.
