Depends on your constabulary, Usually the dealer fills in a proforma with all details of firearm, and that is processed by the F.L.O.
If it is a private sale then it is the seller who informs the Police F.O.
All the same if you wish to cover yourself completely then it will do no harm to inform them yourself in writing, at least they will have something to cross reference with (more paperwork for plod, but they love that kind of thing) The purpose of all this is simply to trace the firearm through its life and 'account for it's whereabouts' at all times.;)

BOTH !
Dealer is legally responsible of informing plod he has sold it to you
You are legally responsible of telling plod you have aquirred it.
Contact your local FEO [Firearms Enquiry officer] or Regional Firearms HQ, and they will give to a transfer form to fill in [or tell you how/where to download one]

my local fuzz now have a contact centre that doesn't give out addresses or direct numbers, so I can't post the notification as i don't know where to and they weren't answering the phone today, you get a nice answrphone message saying leave name number etc which cuts you off at the end

I didn't fill out any special forms.
The seller should have updated your SGC with the transaction, just copy these details to a simple notification letter.
Hand the letter in to your local police station within 7 days, they will pass it on.
Ask for a reciept if you want.

And nor do you need to.
but as you say, you do need to notify them within 7 days, and most forces have a special form to help you supply correct/required info :)

i just had the same concerns. So far all the guns i had bought had the information passed onto the police by the dealer. they where adiment i had to do nothing until i sold the guns. But when i bought my SBS 2 weeks ago they said i should send it off, (same dealer) which made me wonder if i should had informed the police for the other guns. I looked closely at my licence and you should under punishment of prision and a big fine. But when i bought my first gun, the inspector knew to come and check my cabinet becasue he had got the information from the dealer. So? i dont know. i sent a letter informing them that i had bought it, and put it on my dads ticket and just underlined all the othere guns purchased.
