I've found putting fishing line around the edge of the pond is effective, especially if you make a grid over the pond as well.;)
Andy.
Ps are JR's fond of water & swimming.:D

I've heard that a well placed shotgun blast is also quite effective, and they don't return.

Must try that one ;):D
Luckily we have only had one visit (that we know of) from a heron which led to the loss of one of our fish :( (he had to go for the biggest one didn't he ).
I don't know why we get visited though, there is a huge lake nearby and there is a large house nearby with a koi pond, i don't see why they would be bothered with goldfish.

Used to have a net over the pond but the heron still used to stab the fish through the net and kill them even though he could`nt get to them.
Have nearly lost a dog over the fence a couple of times when they have hung onto the herons tail feathers as he took off.

Time for a bigger dog? :D:D Not having fish but having a family of herons nesting in a beech tree across the road, I'm probably on their side but can understand your frustration. Don't 'spose you know which variety of heron yours are, they sound bigger than ours? Hope you can find a win win solution.:)

A bit bigger than ours, the white faced heron (Ardea Novaehollandiae) about 27 inches. Can imagine yours could grab a fair sized Koi. :( Maybe run some wires hooked into the mains round your pond, it'd soon get the message. :D:D

Thought you were supposed to put out food for the birds, to help them make it through the winter?
Sorry could not resist it.
Want to borrow an 85kg dog, like to see the heron that could take off with that attached to his tail feathers.

Well air rifles certainly don't bother them  Our neighbour gets the occasional visit to her pond but she now has netting over to stop the thing, she lost one to it and that was enough :(

Shooting protected birds with an air rifle is a big no no. It's people like your neighbour who give responsible shooters a bad name.:Cross:

When I lived in Derby I had a small pond and a bloody heron nicked all my fish:(
Now I live just above the middle millpond in Pembroke and it is fascinating watching them doing their fishing, cormorants too. Not much point in having a garden fishpond here:D
cheers, Tim

Fair enough. As regards to the shotgun I thought he was joking, shooters are under so much pressure with this government & pc fools.:(

Dont mention cormorants up here Tim, they've ruined the trout fishing at Loch Leven (Fife) and the anglers are up in arms as SNH will not sanction any attempts to move them/kill them.
We've also got a seal in the lower reaches of the River South Esk which will be playing havoc with the salmon and sea-trout runs:eek:
 Where's me harpoon!

just put a big sheet of chicken wire over the surface of the water, or plastic netting just under the surface of the water, so you can still see your fish and have the asthetic beauty of birds in your garden. The problem with using the noise of an air rifle or shotgun blast to scare the pest bird away is that it will also scare away the birds and animals that you appreciate coming into your garden.
A dog in the garden is a better alternative to an Asian leopard cat, I can't image you'd have a Heron with the latter or much else either... :scratchCh

My pal has a very large pond full of even more expensive fish. His house backs onto the canal. After several visits from the big grey fish eating budgies and a costly bill regards to his koi. He now simply uses a life like plastic heron hanging over the side of his pond and has had no trouble since.
