In May of this year the distance I was travelling to work changed from 10 miles per day to 26 and it became a bit dear to keep using my 1979 S3 109 safari so i bought an old banger that done some more mpg , anyway the landrover sat in the garden until a couple of weeks ago when I started reading GS1000MANs thread and that as they say was that. I wont go through the restoration step by step but perhaps the odd photo and question now and then
this photo if it works was taken today.

At last....Somebody else who uses Red Oxide paint! I feel vindicated! What are you going to use as a top coat?
The footwells look like they are in good nick! Are you replacing the springs with standard, or parabolics?
BTW, hope you don't mind, but I shrunk the pic a wee bit, so it can be seen all on the screen.

Thanks for the replies
answers to the questions are,
I hope to clean and paint the chassis with red oxide as I work along , as for the top coat I will probably use black hammerite smooth . Im not quite sure about the springs Iwould like to renew with paras all round but cant afford at the moment also the rear springs are only 18 months old , does any one know what the ride would be like with paras on the front and standards on the back ?
As for the footwells they might look ok in the photo but they are a bit rotten and have been patched up before . I am fortunate that my job allows me access to some decent metal and I can weld so any metalwork shouldnt be a prob. Sorry about the pic Ill try to send the right size next time. Oh yes our cat thinks it is cat litter.

I am glad to see someone else having a go.
When you look back at the photos in months to come, you will see that it was all worth while.
It is a real messy and time consuming job, stripping all of the old grease and paint from the chassis, but when its all painted, you look at it and say to yourself, "Thank Christ for that, I won't have to do that again for another 20 years with any luck!"
I hope my thread gave you some inspiration, good luck with you restoration and keep us posted.

Nice to hear from you gaz (my mentor ) I dont think the paint work will be as professional as yours but my main aim at the moment is to keep the rot at bay also I have caught the bug and started to paint every thing I can see , the engine block is metalic hammer green left over from the thames barrier so the bloke in the stores at work told me . I will be picking your brains in the future as I hope to put things back together as I go the main reason being I dont have a garage.
Thought you might like to see my other mode of transport as this has become a bit of a bikers forum .

I have been looking at the photo of your bike and have been trying to make out what it is.
Is it a Honda SP1, with the fairing missing, bars changed, indicators changed for £10 a pair mini indicators and ART oval race cans.
Or am I miles out?
I can't make out the engine in the photo, but SP1s normally have radiators either side of the engine and not one at the front.
I think it looks great though. Did you buy it like that, or did do it yourself ?
It looks my type of bike, as I am addicted to wheelieing.
My GS1000s is great for low speed wheelieing i.e; from 10 to 60 mph, but my CBR1000 is great for 35 to 95 mph wheelieing.
But I should grow up and stop doing these silly antics.
One day!

I was going to streetfight my CBR1000f, but there was so much wiring around the clock area, so I decided to put it back to standard.
Yours looks great though.
The way you make the images smaller is:
If you have Adobe photoshop,
Start it up and open the image you want to reduce.
When the image is on the screen, you go to the top menu and go to the IMAGE MENU, go down to image size and a box will open up.
Go to the bit that says DOCUMENT SIZE and put in smaller sizes than you have.
Then once the image is resized, go to the top FILE menu, and click on SAVE FOR WEB.
This will cut down the image size, so that it loads up quicker on the site.
Good luck from Gaz

Hi Gaz
thank for the tips on making the pics smaller for mailing mine are on windows xp camera scanner wizard , there is probably a simple way to do it on that , but if your like me I tend to sit down and do this last thing at night and my brain isnt working at its best .
Getting back to land rovers , I painted the block saturday ( yes that thames barrier green ) also I found out where some of that famous L.R. oil comes from , when I removed the sump it was warped and only 1\2 of it was making a seal so it looks like a new one , at least thats something less to paint .
( feel free to email me if you fancy any more bike chat )

Not really much to say in this one its more of a test to see if I can send the correct size photo . you might think this a bit of a strange way to go about a strip down and rebuild , but because of the weather this time of year and me not having a garage I can use the back as extra storage space for bits , also my wife didnt want it in the lounge over christmas (selfish or what ).

I have jusyt tried paint.
no resize.....
I had a look at paint and now I know why I don't use it.
I tried resizing by grabbing a corner, I couldn't maintain
the aspect ratio?
Usually you hold cntl and drag to maintain aspect, or
similar. spose there might be a trick to it..
get a copy of paintshop pro, it's great and pretty easy..
I epect there are loads of free jpg tools to do resizing and compressing, paint shop pro is pretty easy though.
er, there appears to be a bike on my post!!

Hi there Rob,
I shrunk your piccy on page 1, thats down to 320x240 pixels. I use Corel photo paint, which came free with Coreldraw 10, and am running Windoze XP home.
Like integerspin says, windoze paint is hopeless, I can't get my head round it at all, never does what I want it to!
Now for the serious stuff.....That Thames Barrier green....Wow! It's not a bad colour at all, very friendly on the eye. Shame your wife won't let you work in the house, especially this time of year! My wife lets me do some stuff in the house ( not unknown for us to have had a bike stripped down in the kitchen before now) but we got a shed this year which means a lot of stuff can be done in there. Our garage is one of them park in the street types!
You certainly seem to be making good progress, I look forward to seeing more.

Hi
I found I could resize the photos ok on paint and another programme ive got , it was actually trying to see them on a preview before mailing , Ive done it ok on my normal aol emails
Ithink a lot of the trouble as I mentioned before is sitting down to the pc at 11 or 12 at night when my brain aint working proper .
Are most of us landrover persons into bikes ? or is it just a boys toys thing ? If it gets to much we will have to start a new thread
"L.R. owners bikes".
The green paint is nice I was surprized it covers well in 1 coat and dries really hard . Does anyone an etching primer for aluminium that you can brush on ? as I might paint some of the inside with the green if I have enough .
Sheds : bought 1 of those big metal sheds filled it ,
bought big wooden shed with double doors filled it , bought small lean to type shed filled that too , garden looks like that bit in the garden centre were all the sheds are , oh yes and the back of the landrover is full too .
havent done much work on the L.R. , had about 1 metre of rain here.

I have that late at night type of problem too, but to be completely honest, I have that kind of problem most of the time!:hahaha:
Bikes...well, I guess it would be interesting if you were to start a Landy owners and their bikes thread.... I bet there would be quite a few! I was a courier for a while, and have always loved bikes... I have always loved Landies too, I can still get the breeze around my knees, and have the added bonus of not falling off!
I found that Wickes do a non ferrous primer, as do B&Q I think, we used it as an undercoat on our old SIIa, and it worked really well! I was quite surprised, I kind of expected it to react to the bare alloy, but it didnt!
He-he....I have two sheds now too! Seems like a habit thats hard to get out of don't it! No space for shed 3 though.......

I went to Wickes today to have a look at the primers , reading on the back of a small tin of red oxide it said suitable for ferrous and non ferrous metals including aluminium and Ive got plenty of red oxide so l will give it a try .

Hi
I managed to get a bit done this weekend
cut out nearside footplate welded in a new 2mm thick zinc coated bit that I borrowed from work .
Also removed the shelves & dash
I did have thoughts of completely rewiring the landrover but after seeing the spaghetti behind the clocks I turned my attention back to the bigger bits like perhaps replacing the floor panels with chequer plate.

yeah that 2mm stuff certainly seems stronger than the origonal
I also intend to cover it with some chequer plate to insulate from noise,it might be going over the top but I can get offcuts from work.
If this picture comes out ok you might be able to see some of the dodgy wiring , more connections than a game of connex and I think there was a small fire behind there at some time .

No problem Rob, I resized them for you! I try and aim for about 500 pixels wide, maybe 550, then that should fit within the margins.
That footwell looks good! Did you weld the seam on the outside as well? I need to do similar to my drivers side footwell....though it's not really too bad, it has a patch welded on over a bad bit that needs cutting out and replacing. Nothing wrong with it structurally, it just looks a mess.
I missed out on some chequer plate on saturday that was being chucked out of a chip shop in Wick.....just didn't have room on board for it at the time :Cross: Great stuff to make the floor panels with though, non slip when it's wet.
That wiring.....!!!! Somebody has had fun in there....at least they seem to have used connectors instead of the fantastic 'twisted wire and insulation tape' that the person who originally wired the trailer lights and relay in to ours. Boy, I had some fun putting that lot right!
ROB HUGHES
18th Feb 2004, 22:28
Yes sir I promise to do more homework on the resizing.
I did weld the foot plate both sides abit painful on the underneath run though plenty of sparks down the sleeve.
the drivers side on mine looks worse its not rotted through but like you said the patchwork thats on there looks a mess.

Got an A+ for that pic mate!:hahaha:
You never know, maybe a good clean up is all that will be required for the drivers side? This welding lark is fine when the workpiece is in a sensible position.....different kettle of fish entirely when you are lying under the job though...Hurts don't it!!??
I found a good tip a while back...when you come to replace the inner wings/mud shields, if you fit some washers between the mudshield and the footwell, it allows the dirt and water to run out, rather than getting trapped in the valley formed on the top side of the join, which leads to the dreaded rust worms. A gap of about an eighth of an inch will be fine.
It's looking good, Rob!

Well your old bike is coming on now. I have made the new framework for the headlamps , indicatos and clocks and it is all on now. Looks great, but you will have to wait till tomorrow for the pic. One thing I did find, was that you had wired the headlamps wrongly. When the headlamps were switched on, the low beams came on, and when the high beam was applied, both high and low beams lit up together. Not a worry really, but you must have wired the low beam up to the pilot light feed. I will sort it out later.
Thanks for the bike by the way, I love it and it has gone to a good home.
Saying that, did you know that it wheelies in 3rd gear at around 85mph. GREAT!

Anyway back to the land rover
might need some advice here,as in the photo everything is hanging and connected up nothing is tightened up yet ,am I right in thinking that if I let the landrover down on the wheels it should be ok to tighten things up then,or do I have to move it back and forth or drive it about? also at the moment the prop shaft doesnt reach the diff.
answers on a post card please or a reply.

Right enough, nip the nuts up, but just to take out the slack, then let it down onto the wheels, and then torque everything up to the specs.
Once you have it back on the road, run it for a week or two, and then check all the torques on the road springs, and 'specially the u-bolts holding the axle to the spring.
Don't know why the prop won't fit, try it again once everything is back on the ground!( the diff will come further back once the springs are compressed a bit.)
Looks good though, I think you and gaz ought to set yourselves up to rival Liveridge 4x4 :hahaha: !

I see what you are saying, as it looks at the moment the bits on the nearside seems to line up ok but the offside is way out,the shock doesnt seem to be long enough and the base plate will not lay square, is this normal until everything settles down?or is there a sequence of what bits to tighten 1st.
One other thought is ,are there left & right hand shock as with the springs.

Hey Rob,
You say the propshaft don't fit?
May be a silly question, but the slider is still sliding in the propshaft is it?
You see if you go off road and both of the front wheels leave the ground, then the propshaft will not be able to extend enough and may come apart.
I don't know if you can get the springs on the wrong way around?
Just see if the axle mount point is in the center or forward from the center of the springs.
Can't think of anything else, but it may be that the prop is not extending fully.
Good luck Gaz.
Big Sandy
26th Apr 2004, 22:50
Rob, The shox are the same from side to side, but the only difference is between front and rear.
As Gaz says, the slider in the propshaft may be a bit sticky, there should be some travel from front to rear in it.
The springs should be the same length... ie, it doesn't matter which way round they are, just which side. The difficult bit is getting the locating dowel between the shocker mounting plate and the spring to fit in to the hole ...one side will drop in quite easily, but the other (usually the drivers side) can be a real pain. I pulled the last one in with a sash cramp, believe it or not( :buck: ), wedged between the axle and the spring hanger at the rear of the spring. Its a question of maneouvering the axle until it fits! Not as easy as it sounds, but hey, you'll get there.
(Edited to add, I mean the dowel that locates the spring to the axle! Was online too far past my bedtime last night!:coffee: :hahaha: )

Thanks Sandy
let it down on to the wheels ,rocked it back & forward the prop reaches now , both the dowels you mention are in their holes but the n/s doesnt sit right flat against the spring, the o/s bottom plate looking down from above isnt square,
but I still havnt tightened anything yet so I think I have got most things ok.
it will be a few months before I find out.
One other little point the landrover seems to be sitting high at the front now , will the new springs settle down and level out? other wise it looks like a new set of rears as well.
Which brings me to another point, the hole centres on the rear springs are 48" approx and at work I have come across 2 lovely transit springs and the holes are 51 1/4" they are 1 yr old and have 3 leaves, Ive heard people talking about using transit springs on the forum , is there a way I could use these ?
thanks
Rob
Big Sandy
29th Apr 2004, 19:14
Quite likely the springs will settle a bit..... DON'T oil them whatever you do, I know everybody says you should, but it allows too much movement in the spring and wears them out quicker! (That'll start an argument, now.)
If you have a look at the spring hangers at the rear, if the shackle plates are at an angle less than 45 degrees (approx), then you will likely be looking at some new rears as well, but you might get away with just re-bushing the spring and the chassis mounting point.
Not sure about the tranny springs.....
