View Full Version : REd Arrows banned from performing at the London Olympics

The world-famous Red Arrows have been banned from appearing at the 2012 London Olympics because they are deemed "too British".

Organisers of the event say that the Arrows military background might be "offensive" to other countries taking part in the Games. The display team have performed at more than 4000 events worldwide, but the Department of Culture, Media and Sport have deemed the display team "too militaristically British". Red Arrows pilots were said to be "outraged", as they had hoped to put on a truly world class display for the Games, something which had never been seen before. Being axed from a British-based event for being "too British" is an insult - the Arrows are a symbol of Britain.

The Red Arrows have been excellent ambassadors for British overseas trade, as they display their British-built Hawk aircraft all over the world.

The Arrows performed a short flypast in 2005 when the winning bid was announced, but their flypast at the Games was to have been truly spectacular.

It is to be hoped that common sense prevails

Absolute madness that they can't be taken purely for entertainment albeit very British entertainment.

Come to think about it, the Olympics should be banned..it makes out children far to competative. Who wants there kids running around keeping fit with there mates when they could be locked in there bedroom being grommed by paedophiles on the internet or playing shoot em ups on there x-box!

Yep, in favour of that, as already I have already seen groups who have applied for lottery funding been knocked back due to the funding been put to one side for the games. (One group requesting funding for new tennis courts were told to reapply after the games, as more funding will be available then.... )

Whats this country coming to so the Red arrows are too British to display at the British Olympics.?
instead they will let off millions of pounds worth of fireworks made in china. :(

Seems strange. And, on a vaguely related note I think that there was an aviation discipline in the Olympics, possibly, it was Hitler that introduced it.

Yep, I just checked, there was an aerobics competition in the 1936 Olympics, Berlin.

I suppose, therefore, someone could argue that the Red Arrows display would follow in Olympic tradition.

;):D

Given that Britain is the host country, surely it matters not a jot that we show something British, or even maybe it should be imperative that we do show something British.. very poor decision indeed.:(

Just shows what a shambles this country is in.

Can't do anything "British" in case we upset the newcomers, well 2 fingers up to the lot of em.

I'll fly the Union Jack and St Georges Cross, I'll celebrate our Saints day , Easter and Christmas and if they don't like it they know what they can do and this guy should be one of the first to depart

A Muslim dentist has been found guilty of telling a female patient she could not register with him unless she wore an Islamic headscarf.
The disciplinary hearing of the General Medical Council heard that Dr Omer Butt constructed a "tissue of lies" to protect himself.

The patient said she was "humiliated and upset" after the encounter at the surgery in Bury, Greater Manchester.

Dr Butt could now have his licence to practise dentistry revoked.

The dentist denied the charges, but admitted he would ask Muslim women to cover up in accordance with Islamic law before he treated them and reducing fees to encourage patients to wear the headscarf.

Totally agree with BM, this is ridiculous what is wrong with presenting something British.

Quote below taken from wikipedia article about 2004 Athens games

The initial part of the ceremony interspersed the performances of various Greek singers, and featured traditional Greek dance performances from various regions of Greece (Crete, Pontos, Thessaly, etc). The event was meant to highlight the pride of the Greeks in their culture and country for the world to see.

No complaints came from the greeks showing pride in themselves so why can't we show pride in ourselves :Bloodymad

I supprised they haven't said no Red Arrows, because of the amount of C02 that they will produce:eek:

I wonder how much CO2 will be released by flying in all those people from all over the world:rolleyes: Or I guess the Scottish entries could get to London by train, but they would prob have to have left yesterday morning to get there on time

That olympic flame must release quite a bit of CO2 being left lit for all that time

The whole P.C. thing has got way out of hand these days, It starts of with little changes ' to accommodate ' immigrants, fair enough, but then the powers that be don't actually know when to stop and what you end up with is an embarrassing cowtowing to everyone across the board in the hope of building a utiopian society where everyone is 'stepford' happy.
Er. hello! you can't please everyone all the time. Utopia is a fantasy, and if anyone stopped to ask the immigrants their views, they would also do away with the Political Correctness..
My personal belief is that if you are in Rome do as the Romans do, if you don't like it then close the door on your way out.
If you think i'm talking rubbish then look at France, Germany and many other countries, they don't tolerate any of that P.C. crap. Which is why I now live over here as a guest in someone else's country.
I feel that the Red Arrows should just turn up on the day, put on the best display yet, and see what the organisers do then :D:D Besides, i don't think British Airways 747 display team would really cut it........:)

I bet that will come up and they will arrange for it to be lit by biomethane.

I think in the spirit of the Olympics, ie excessive physical excercise, they should have a flyby of pedal powered aircraft.

I think it's disgusting that they've banned the Red Arrows from the Olympics.
I agree that yes, the Red Arrows are millitaristic HOWEVER they are an intrinsic part of British tradition. I don't know anyone who hasn't seen at least one of their displays.

I'm just waiting for the decision to ban them all together due to the "Carbon Footprint" they leave.

There's not a lot left to be proud of in being British with a huge loss of national identity. Please, let them leave us with something at least!

I believe the government has been wanting to bin the Red Arrows, the BBMF and any other remembrance and historical items to save costs as they do not "Do anything worthwhile" for quite some time but have been up against fierce opposition to date.

Probably not, Kimbolton who we get fireworks for the village display from, manufacture in the UK and are responsible for many of the major displays in the UK and elsewhere.

Kimbolton Fireworks has created displays for some of the largest and most prestigious events, from Trafalgar 200 and the 50th anniversary of VJ Day in London, to Cowes Regatta and Legoland. However our expertise is not limited to the UK, we export fireworks all over the world and were responsible for the display to celebrate the hand over of Hong Kong to China, as well as one of Europe's largest annual firework displays: Dublin's St. Patrick's Day Skyfest display

the arrows are among the best recruiting and sales tools that HMG has at its disposal, and they know it too... had there been any arguments over costworthiness they woulda shown up years ago...
