View Full Version : Air Gun... what to buy as a beginner?

I’m thinking of getting a air rifle. Mainly for target practice and eventually once I can shoot maybe a little hunting etc. I have never owned a rifle so I have no idea what to look for. I have looked online and found a local shooting range where I can practice etc.

I’ve been looking at the Comete 300 Nickle air rifle at my local gun shop. I have read some good review about this rifle but as I have no experience I was just wondering if this would be a good rifle to start with as a beginner. Should I get a scope or just start with a basic rifle.

Cheers

For hunting certain types of air rifle are more suitable. Avoid those air rifles which take excessive time to charge, load and fire. Repeating air rifles give an immediate second shot which is always an advantage as do the CO2 cartridge or pumped ones.

Also for hunting you want a rifle with a min of 11Ft lb. anything over 12 and you need a firearms licence.

A scope is only required for shooting over a larger distance and personnally I would start without one. When you get one you need to learn how to zero it and IMHO until you can shoot acuratly without one then I don't see how you can zero a scope.

As a stating rifle the Comete looks good but for hunting I would go for a rifle with repeat shot option. I like the BSA ULTRA.

Thanks for all the advice. In the end I went for the Cometa 300s .177. To be honest it is a very good gun for the money. I got the rifle, Hawk scope, bag and some pellets for £174. I went to the local gun club last week and set up the scope etc and it shoots very well.
