How does the traction control work??

I aks because I went around a roundabout sideways over the weekend, I wasn't gunning it or racing but was suprised when the back started to drift around.

I tried this on anoher roundabout and nothing happened so am putting it down to oil/diesel on the ground, but the TC never kicked in.

Any body know why???:)

Depends on road conditions, tyres, etc. why you skidded. But basically you were going too fast for road conditions:eek::). But the ETC doesn't work going sideways:D It only tries to stop the wheels skidding if they spin, when it will apply brakes to the offending wheel. If you were braking then the "anti lockup" would come into action and release momentarily the sliding wheel then reapply brakes to that wheel.

you will know when TC activates. there will be a distinct grinding noise coming from below. TC activates whenever there is a wheel spinning freely, including taking corners. try driving a bit hard (not necessarily fast) on a sandy sharp corner and chances are you will hear this grinding noise. one of your inner wheel loses traction due to being lifted from the ground (centrifugal force) and so TC activates to remove power to that wheel.

if TC didnt activate on that roundabout, then you are just skidding sideways due to slippery road condition (bald tyre, oil, etc).

OK guys thanks for the reply, I have heard the TC going before on gravel when booting it in a straight line.

It must have been diesel on the road (glad I wasn't on my bike) the tyres are not new but OK and I wasn't driving that hard and it was drizzly light rain.

I guessed the TC wouldnt work when going sideways, though it wasn't anything like Clarkson and pals on the airfield.

Thanks

There yer go, it was the drizzle and that dangerous greasy stage between dry and soaking wet! Thats why your back end came out. Done this in the 90.

Its possible to Drift the Disco 2, i have done it a couple of times but its not a good feeling and it feels very unsteady

The GF Smart Brabus roadster is great for this untill the TC kicks in, you can get to about 40deg of before this kicks in:D

I can confirm you can driftt the D2 especially in the wet, and will also lift a wheel in the dry and still keep going without the tc cutting in always feels in control, in my old 300 it would be on its roof.

Please note i dont drive like a nutter :)
