hi folks on a dam cold day how long or how far do you have to drive before it gets upto temp? MINE TAKES AGES OR AT LEAST 8 MILES, HAD A BRAND NEW THERMOSTAT FITTED AND DID.NT MAKE A DIFFERENCE, IS THE AIR CON SUPPOSE TO GET HOTTER QUICKER OR DID I READ THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL WRONG??????

I've noticed that on my Disco ES Auto (only had it about a month)......a drive of about the same distance through mainly 30mph limits (from station to home) doesn't get up to temp until very near home.
I assumed it was just a feature of going relatively slowly, as shorter runs at higher speed seem to get up to temp a lot quicker.
Cheers for now

I'm not familiar with all the workings of a TD5, but assuming it's like most cars with aircon, the aircon system provides two main functions: dehumidifying the air; providing cooled air.
If your concern is that the engine takes a long time before the temp gauge reads normal operating temperature, you could always try the method I use on my TDi, take off your viscous fan !!
In cold weather this fan is blowing more cold air onto the engine. It is easy to take off (30 secs or less), try it to judge the effect, always carry the fan and spanner with you incase you need it.
4x4 are generally over-cooled to take into account the times when the engine is working hard but at relatively low roadspeed such as offroad and or towing.
I find my car warms up with 2 gentle miles so surely this is better for the engine?
BTY, my car NEVER overheats with the fan permanently off !!

I agree with the above, dont know about disco's , but i run my 2.25 diesel with the fan removed and a half rad muff(home made) and warm up is down to 3 miles from 8-9 miles at a gentle trundle:D
Chris
My td5 takes 5 or 6 miles at 50-60 mph to get the gauge to normal; BUT it does start delivering warmish air after only a mile or two. About 3 miles sooner than the 200tdi ever did!

TD5 switch air con to econ this switchs the air con off set temp to 23 ish takes a while but nowheres near 8 miles.
I have to drive through town on my way to work and it takes 4 miles before engine at full temp.
Quicker on the way home as its faster roads.
DO NOT remove viscous fan on TD5 without fitting elec fan or similiar, i had kenlowes on my previous 3 TDIs, but the underbonnet temps on the TD5 are much hotter lift the bonnet after a run to see.
I have wanted to fit elec fan to mine but cyl heads are a bloody fortune 300 TDI £300 TD5 £600 second hand:eek:

td5 04 disco
mines the same on a cold day 5Degs or below mine takes several miles to heat up, and if your only doing a short trip 8 miles or so which i regularly do it never gets to the right temp. I wanted to remove the viscous fan and replce with a kenlowe but was told the head would warp. I understand that a few people on this forum have done the swap with no problems??
It must be better surely for the engine to get to operating temperature quicker??
interesting thread ....:)

Gents, You should be glad your viscous fan is not stuck on....like mine:D
Takes an age to warm up....

Mine was a colder runner, then I sprayed a bit of wd40 inthe viscous fan and cleaned out all the mud
Runs a lot hotter now, quick to get to normal. makes a hell of a diference with economy up from ~35mph to the ~40mph mark

I should try WD 40....might save me some petrol

so this fan everyone is spraying with wd-40 is it supposed to be stationary when cold then kick in when it gets hot? cus mines spins all the time i think?

They usually spin all the time, the difference is that when cold you should be able to stop the fan rotating by stuffing a rolled-up newspaper or similar into it (not your hand!!) whereas when the engine is up to temp it will continue to turn.
Viscous fans imho are not very satisfactory. I run a TDi 200 and as I said I took it off about 18 months ago.
No bad side effects, only quieter, quicker to warm up and more economical - in fact all the benefits of a Kenlowe fan, without having to buy a Kenlowe fan !!

Does it always turn? I read in this months Land Rover international that when cold (and the engine turn off) the fan should turn freely though not when hot (and the engine is off).
This morning I had a fiddle and mine is stuck fast - not movement what to ever.
Does anyone know if you can service the unit? Whats invlved? Is it more cost effective to buy a new one?

Viscous fan should have resistance when cold and even more when hot, no need to have engine running, just use your hand and if it stops turning as soon as you let go its okay.
200 82deg c runs colder then the 300 88 degc and a lot lot cooler then a TD5 mid 90sdeg c.
cant see how wd40 makes any difference as the viscous unit is a sealed unit unless you cleaned out a load of dirt fom offroading etc.

The viscous unit is not a servicable item, sounds like yours needs replacing. About £50 from the usual suspects.

so if the fan i seen was the aircon which was directly behind ma grill which cools the aircon rad which is directly in front of ma visc fan, then where the bloody hell is ma main radiator?
