Drink-drive limit in Ireland to be cut to 50mg
Drink-drive limit in Ireland to be cut to 50mg
The drink-drive limit in Ireland will be cut by the end of 2009, ministers announced today.
The current limit of 80mg alcohol per 100ml blood will be cut to 50mg, with a lower limit of 20mg for learner drivers and people who drive for work.
Re: Drink-drive limit in Ireland to be cut to 50mg
Hmmm. Might be a good time to offload the Guiness shares.
Good idea to have a lower limit for learners and working drivers, though why not just make it 20 across the board? It is here and many other countries.
Re: Drink-drive limit in Ireland to be cut to 50mg
Why not just impose an outright ban? Solve all the problems.

:cool:But who is there to catch those that will ignore it ...dont seem many Guarda about outside town [except in Maguires bar:D]???
Re: Drink-drive limit in Ireland to be cut to 50mg
Ban it completely and that will put just about every country pub out of business, a sensible limit that allows for a drink is a more reasoned approach in my opinion.

I totaly agree, also raise the legal drinking age to 21, this may stop some of the drink related problems.

Bunch of bl**dy Puritans.
Abolish the limit BUT, make alcohol consumptionan "exacerbating factor" if youn do any harm while drunk, say double the sober penalty.
The breathalyser has ruined many good country pubs, most that survive have to become restaurants to continue in business which defeats the ethos of a "proper pub"
It's just another stultifying excresence of the 'Elfansafty culture

And what happens when you have say 4 pints on a friday night, and sensibly get a taxi home, then drive to town in the morning and are found to have only 5mg in your breath and end up with a 12 month ban??
Are you saying that, that is resonable??
Re: Drink-drive limit in Ireland to be cut to 50mg
The zero limit is a great way to get attention but is really unworkable. Some medicines contain components that read as a small alchoholic content. Therefore anyone who is on medication... even if it not detremental to their performance, is suddenly subject to a charge of drink driving!
A smaller limit, however, is sensible. You can not put the well being of the landlord above the safety issues presented by drinkers who then drive. If every lnd lord went out of business and just a few kids were saved from being maimed or killed by drunk drivers then the measure is justified. No Question.
However... There are still measures that pubs can take... one might buy a minibus and take the proper drinkers home without them driving for example...(I am not suggesting a business plan just saying that one could think laterally rather than putting victims lives lower than pub incomes on the importance board!)
Yes... Ireland has a reputation for quaint little country pubs and bobbies who will turn a blind eye to the occasional ****-head driver. No reason why these people shouldn't be sensible too!
Personlly I support the "Random Breathalyzer" test that was much maligned a few years ago... got stopped meself a few times, nothing more serious than a ten minute delay getting home... drink-driving related accidents in my town dropped by a reported 65% Well worthwhile.
Re: Drink-drive limit in Ireland to be cut to 50mg
You would criminalize the majority of the nation if you had an outright ban. Especially for the morning after brigade. I also got stopped as I fell out of an off license - the threshold plate was loose and caught my laces. The copper saw me get into my car and did the " i believe you are under the influence" routine. He was really fed up when his machine showed green lights

One pub/resteraunt that I have been to has a minibus. We booked a table for a family do (8 people) and they came and picked us up, and then a few hours took us home for free. Its only a local family run business and not sme chain.

I got a tug for driving a rough looking car with 5 people in through a rough estate at 2 in the morning with a busted headlamp. The copper walked right up to me and was obviously trying to catch a wiff of alcohol. Obviously there was none and his manner instantly changed and he just explained that it looked suspitios from the outside but as everything was in order I could be on my way.
Never had a problem with that sort of stop! Oh he did tell me to fix my headlamp though!
