Default is there much difference between 7.50/16 and 235/85/16?

    yes , another tyre thread,
i was thinking about buying some michelin 7.50/16 xzl's but dismissed them as being a wee bit thin.
then i found some michelin xzl's listed as 235/85/16/.

    are these the same tyre?

nobber, 235/85 is always bandied as the metric equivalent for 7.50s, but they are about an inch or so wider and look better.

235/85/16 is the metric equivelent of the 7.50's and I believe a tad wider. Im running that size on my series at the moment! Not been stuck once with them!

Although not sure what tread patern the XZL's are!

I run on G90s which are 7.50s and they are slightly narrow, however I have never been stuck because of my tyres, just through lack of experience Johnty uses the same tyres on his disco and has never been stuck with them and has even gone places that a lad in a 90 couldn't go

7.50x16 and 235/85x16 are often quoted as being the same size as each other, they aren't. As an equivalent, they're similar in rolling radius.

7.50x16 are around 190mm wide and are as tall (depending on manufacturer - Michelins tend to be taller) as they are wide - 100% ratio.

    235/85x16 are 235mm wide and around 200mm high - 85% ratio.

The differences between the imperial and metric sizes of Michelin XZL (or 4x4 O/R, as the smaller sizes are also branded) is not just the size, the tread pattern is different as well.

The imperial sized tyres have three tread blocks, whereas the metric sized tyres have four tread blocks (similar to a M/T pattern), see attachments.

Nobber! before you go out and buy some g90's, ask around on all the forums, as I've heard they wear quickly, are noisey, and more than a tad skittish on tarmac. BUT if you do want some, check on e-blag some guy in sussex (down your way) is selling g90's on wolf wheels , all brand new and balanced, for 75.00 each, Thats for wheel and tyre!!!!!! seems a good price if thats wat u want. Think he's got lots! cheers stumpy.

i was going to go for 235 85 16 xzl's , an internet shop was selling them for 56 quid each. i rang them up to find out if they could deliver them before friday and i was told they only had one in stock , they wanted rid of it thus it was only 56 quid.

ive been and had a look at that guys wheels and tyres , they are from a fleet of 110's that were given to some agricultural something or other and they have a few hundred miles on them , some though were spare wheels so are spanking new.

the xzl's he is selling are 7.50 x 16 and i think they look a tad thin , but im slowley talking my self round to buying a set.
ive been looking for some 7.50 x 16 tyres for donkeys now and had my heart set on general sags but they decided to stop making them just as i decided i wanted some.

I will admit the G90s are slightly noisy on the road, I also heard they were skittish on wet tarmac but can honestly say I have never had a problem with them that way. Maybe cos I am female I don't drive badly enough As for wearing quickly I cannot comment as I have had mine on 18 months but not done a lot of mileage on them. We paid 75 a corner on wolf rims and they were brand new tyres, still had the bobbly bits on ...... and I still have one brand new set cos we bought 3 sets and only used 2

G90's are terrible tyres - hopeless off road and just as hopeless and horrendously noisy on road
I had a set on my 110 V8 pick up and I think tracks would have been quieter on the road !
And as for an empty pick up,wet road and a V8 well, what fun (not)
Old fashioned technology only being kept going cos the military use them - and I bet that's only because they get them cheap
There are LOADS of far better tyres out there !

Love this tyre size! But if you fit them let us know what pressures you are advised to inflate them with as the thread shows the jury is still out on the correct pressure:

interestingly enough the g90's may not be the best handling tyres there is but they are tough as old boots.
ive been looking into different tyres and reading lots of threads on forums about different types of tyres(yup , way too much time on my hands) and the conclusion i came to is g90's , xzl's etc will go on forever over rocky ground that would have torn bfg's to shreds long ago , however they behave and wear out badly on roads, cant be deflated effectivly on sand and might n ot be great in mud (well the xzl's might perform quite well in mud).
most of the decent old xply tyres were pretty much indistructable andf puncture proof but , as we all know , handle like bags of crap on the roads. but if you want road tyres........
