Thread: Steering relay location

    Default Steering relay location

Ok, the new chassis relay hole offers a rather sloppy fit for the steering relay.. What are the usual approaches to dealing with this? The top bolts of the relay hold it but leaves the bottom unsupported and as it is, there must be a good 1/4 inch of movement possible, which will tear the top chassis holes eventually..
So what are your suggestions.. best suggestion gets a prize.... Well not really

80 inch ones have a locating ring at the bottom held on with 4 bolts. I can't see it in my Series 11a parts book - has it been deleted or just omitted from the book?

SII and SIII have this too. It is a collar that snugly fits the bottom of the relay and is secured directly to the chassis with four bolts - the bolt holes will alrerady be in the chassis.

The standard collar that you speak of, on mine is far to light a material to support the relay loadings and the actual hole in this is far from tight on the relay.. I read in one of the magazines that this collar was mearly a guard or trim in effect.. In order to locate the relay in the chassis it needs to be a tight fit, shimmed etc?

Can you make your own collar to a bespoke fit for your requirements??

Common problem that Solihull never sorted but the REME had their final solution - this is what I found on a Lightweight :-

It would appear the relay is a bit of an after-thought.
How many posts have you read about the horrors of removing them.
Shimming the relay is a waste of time, it would damage the galvanize fitting it, so I will machine a collar to pick up on the four 1/4 unf bolts and be a proper fit on the bottom of the relay. Then it will be fully located and easily removed..

Without the bottom plate the relay can move about causing rather vague steering.
Remember to pack plenty of grease around the relay to help prevent problems with getting it out in future.

Ok, here is the relay locating ring I've made. Ive used 6mil plate, machined the inner ring to be a tight fit on the bottom on the relay, with the four holes that will bolt to the guard holes tapped in the chassis. This will pevent any movement. Everything is left original at the top, with the two long bolts passing through the relay. The result is a relay that can be dropped into the chassis, then once the bottom ring is bolted in place and the top bolts secured, no movement of the relay housing can take place. Since it isn't a tight fit in the chassis, the usual problems of removal will be so much simpler.. And the chassis wont be marked either.

    Good work
That's much more sturdy than the original thing.
