    Hi

    More woes

Started my Disco 2 and the 'M' & 'S' warning lights were flashing.

If i look at the lights on my gear selector, they are also flashing. The vehicle drives though.

When you say it drives , I think it is however going into Limp Home Mode isnt it ?

Its the "XYZ" switch on the Gearbox that is misbehaving , either its faulty itself or getting put into Fault Mode by Electrics or Gearbox Mechanical fault.

If you have a look at the Owners manual you will see a reference to this very issue and what you should do . basically Stop and restart Engine to clear the fault. So this sort of thing is obviously a possibility under "normal" conditions . I have never heard of it happening like that myself , the chances are that this is not a straight forward isolated trigger of fault but is going to come back unless you are very lucky.

Not sure how easy the switch is to replace or test , so unless someone more qualified that me has any ideas I guess you should start off by seeing if its being triggered by faulty electrics .

Have you got Air Conditioning as I recall some reference to Air Con circuitry interfering and triggering this and isolating that would stop this happening..

Agree with Graham here, apart from, highly unlikely to be a mechanical fault with the box.
To replace the 'wxyz' switch- a bit fiddly- follow Haynes. No special tools needed. Switch circa 100.
Stop- allow a few minutes- restart- and it will probably clear for a few weeks.
Why oh why can there not be a sticky/FAQ on this one- and 3 amigos.

"before" you condem the XYZ switch,

Check both battery connections and check the voltage at the battery, if the battery is getting old, then when you start the gearbox ECU will sense the low voltage and it and throws the lights.....common indicator of an "ageing" battery.

    Thanks guys for your help.

I stopped and restarted the engine and unfortunately, the lights were still flashing. Maybe it was me being slightly paranoid but the D2 appeared to move sluggish in the car park . .

Anyway, an hour later, i started the vehicle and hey presto! . . . the lights had vanished and all seems normal.

I do have a USA spec 4.6L V8 which i imported into Dubai. Temps here are hitting 46 degrees C so not sure if that has anything to do with it.

I shall watch and wait and dreading the possibility that one day, in the not too distant future, i'll break down midday when its touching 49c

    Do i just leave my D2 on the road and go . . . . eeewww . . . Japanese??

    Hello Fiorano.

At 46 Deg chances are you are running your AC . Here in South Africa on on my Disco II, I had an issue with the AC drain pipe dropping water onto the gearbox selector switch causing it to go into limp home mode with the M & S lights flashing. Extending the drain tube solved the problem and I have not had an issue again.

Thanks for that Paul. Much appreciated

How difficult is it to carry out?

Or might have just come away at the drain plug, I re-sealed mine last week with some RTV. Get underneath with a torch and look for a black tube around 3/8 in dia, coming out of the gearbox tunnel before the diff selector, or just wait for the wet patch on the floor look up.

I'd also check your ATF fluid, if its going brown, smells, tastes cooked get one of those epco's or emirate stations to change it 45 AED or so should do the trick.

A lot less cheaper than Al Tayer!

    Cheers Jimbob. . . .

Noticed you are in the UAE. . . .

Do you know anyone half decent who can look at my ACE/Power Steering pipes to eliminate a really annoying rattling noise??. . . . i don't need the Al Tayer prices.
Thanks for your help! - Max

You can try Triple A at the back of Dubai Garden Center in Al Quoz 04 3470400, there's a Scottish chap who's the manager, nice guy, tells you how it is, no BS

    Price's are around 500 - 600 aed for 5,000 k service, 10,000 k around 1200aed mark, plus parts if needed.

Parts you can try Gulf Star in SHJ 065339600, but you have TO haggle

    Cheers

    Hello Max.

It wasnt too difficult. I just used some fuel hose that I wrapped in foil to shield it from any heat (not sure if this is neccessary but I did it anyway ) and using a small clamp, attatched it to the existing drain tube.

    Hope this helps
