Compared to what the banks had it was peanuts. To put that 400 million into perspective, the NHS in North Wales would use that in 4-5 months and it only covers 1% of the UK population.
I feel what ever your politics what Labour had allowed to happen to British Industry and the number British assets and essential services it's allowed to fall into foreign hands is far worse than anything put at Maggie's door primary because Labour are supposed to look after the people.

This really is a difficult conundrum...my 'gut feeling' is like the French ,to protect our industry & jobs.....but problem no.1...unlike the French{ germans/Italians etc.} the Brits allways thought they would look particularly smart & intelligent 'cool' if they bought an Audi-VW-Renaullt-Fiat etc.
......problem no.2..exemplified by the erstwhile Brit. motorcycle industry....brilliant designers/engineers...stupid arrogant managment..."...but sir,we designed this engine in 1948..& the Japs are rumored to be making a 4cyl. job " ..." shut up boy ! the British pubic are fools & will continue to buy **** for many years yet....we are certainly not going to spend our profits on research or new tooling it was only 20 years ago that we did that!!"

The Govt. rightly or wrongly seem happy enough to take 17.5% plus import duty on all the goods incl cars coming into the country. The jobs are there in servicing selling transporting and supplying parts for those cars more than ever.
No pollution issues in manufacturing the stuff and having to prop Manufactures up when they fail. It`s why most of our jobs are in Service Industry now. I think we have done our time at it and their are smarter ways to make money.

Most of that is a myth.To add to that...........making stuff can be as boring a chore as anything else.
When Chrysler had the factory here you could not get a job in it for love or money. If you worked in the shipyards it was a hard and cold way of life. If you went down the pit it was worse. I have family that worked in all three of the aforementioned. I am in building which is badly hit now but nothing new. Many a day on a building site in filthy conditions and weather I would have loved to be in a clean Supermarket with trainers on (rather than wellys) handling clean goods rather than steel scaffolding poles with ice on them.
I`m sure if two or three Supermarkets had cropped up in our mining villages in the 60s there would have been an Exodus of miners to fill the posts Pronto
There`s nowt wrong with stacking shelves if it`s work your after.
Life was always "better" looking back. We`re not that bad off.
My Nephew was to follow all of us family with a trade. Company went bust before his time was out and he got a job in Barclays sitting in the office handling complaints online.
He`s only 20 and this year has a bonus of 16k on top of a really decent salary............ Yeah things are terrible! No jobs or tradition lasts forever.....thank God......where would we be without change and new challenge.
Nothing personal Mogwyth against your reply............just an alternative viewIn essence a lot of jobs were done in the past as there was no alternative. It`s always the way.
....A well presented/balenced comment Alex....but what allways baffles simple me ,is how a country/society can run & prosper without actually making anything tangible to sell & export? all the rest to me seems like a confidence trick of smoke & mirrors that, when the bluff is called, collapses like a pack of cards until the 7th cavalry[us..] lead by the gallant general Brown rescues it with our money [& our childrens as well ,for years to come!]
