    Default First Car

Bought when I was 16 ,I went halfies with a mate who had a licence. It was a ford popular. We purchased it off a bloke in Robin Hoods Bay (fylingthorpe) I sat in the back during the test drive and going up the hill it sounded like a bag of hammers .I leant forward and mentioned this to the seller .he never battered an eyelid and said ”that’s nothing to worry about when we get to the top it will go away and lo and behold it did, it sounded sweet going downhill I was impressed with his knowledge .We bought it for £12 (we live and learn) I found out later he bought it for £8 a few weeks prior

Mine was a 1988 Vauxhall astra I paid £800 for. Six months later I sold it for £50 after a slight disagreement with a tree. It was banger city for the next few years until I got a proper job and could afford something tidy!

Mine: A 1960 Fiat 1100. Can't remember what I paid for it, but after a couple of years ended up swopping it for a 400cc motorcycle...

Don,t know which one to count? The Ford Classic/Capri that a mate and I used to bomb round a bit of derelict ground when I was 14. The old ford 100E 1172cc side valve that I used to blatt around the farm when I was 15, or The Ford Taunus 1600XL 2 door saloon that was my first Road car in West Germany no less, where I took my UK test (I know sounds odd, but In the Army you could do a dual test where you answered questions as you drove round, on what the equivalent road sign would be in UK, and same for the Q&A at the end of the test....I took mine in a New LHD Bedford MK (71FM71) on the assumption that if you were competent to drive a 4 Tonner in Germany, you could pass a car test. (They sent off a pass for car licence first then sent the licence straight back with a HGV pass.....we had a little black book then)(I,ve still got my MT Drivers permit somewhere - you carried this on exercise etc rather than lose/damage your "rather harder to obtain copies of" licences.

Isetta bubble car (made by BMW!) bought for £30 and sold about 6 months later for £64, wish I'd kept it though, could have kept it in the back of the 110.
First real car (that is with 4 wheels) a 1962 Ford Anglia 1200 Deluxe (I think Deluxe meant it had a two tone paint job and more chrome - primrose yellow with a white flash down the sides) cost £100 in 1969 with 30,000 miles on it, absolutely immaculate until I got hold of it! Ended up with a tuned 1500GT Cortina engine, uprated suspension etc - gave many a sports car a run for their money!

And it would be worth about £10k now

I wish i had a time machine to go back to the 70s and buy all the cars that are worth a fortune now when they were cheap bangers.

Why not do it now? What do you reckon you could buy as a banger now but will be a classic in say 20 years when it's about 30 years old?

I would love to buy a mk4 Escort XR3I or a Fiesta XR2I and drive it now. They remind me of being a teen and too young to drive, but being desperate to!

    Anyway, i digress.
My first cat was a 1991 'H' Ford Sierra Sapphire 1.8GLX Bought for £600 plus tax. I loved it through and through.
I think everyone should have a RWD car for their first car, you really learn how to drive then!

It seems amazing now but when I had it you could still go into the local dealers and buy parts 'off the shelf' for it. I had a full set of special tools, workshop manual and spare engine as well. Before the Isetta I had a Trojan (made by Heinkel of bomber fame) but never got that on the road - 200cc of raw power! I sold it to upgrade to the Isetta much more powerful at 300cc and 15 BHP!
Yes a time machine would be very useful and lucrative in lots of ways.

my first 'officially registered in my name' car was a white austin metro 1.0 city, it didn't even have a radio - I used a sony walkman plugged into two sets of external battery powered speakers under the seats

The first car I brought was a 1978 ford escort estate in powder blue only had it 4 days when some clown in a Tate & Lyle sugar lorry pulled across my path and I went smack bang inot his rear wheel, total right off, think I got about a third more than I paid for it from the insurance and went out and brought a 1978 two tone Cortina estate similar age with a vinyl roof!!! For you youngsters vinyl roofs were cool at one time.
