Never heard of engine flush doing any harm - but my opion is to use more that is says on the engine flush guidlines. Usually if an engine takes 8 litres of oil, it says use 4 litres of flush, but thats effectively the same as running your engine on half the amount of oil it should have. I always fill it to atleast the minimum mark on dipstick when flushing. Then let it warm up so it drains out nicely when you taker the plug out the sump.

We tend to put a pint of red diesel in and run it for a while, then drain it. It's cheap and does work.

The only thing I have against aggressive detergent types is it can move large carbon bits and block oilways, that can cause a seizure.

Diesel grade oils have a higher detergent content, but as said, the best way is change often atr a lower mileage. 5000 for a diesel and 10,000 for a petrol is long enough. The long service periods were brought in for lease fleets to save money, no other reason.
