Default electrical burning smell when trying to start

    Hi all,

I have had problems starting my S3 for a while now, last weekend I noticed an ' electrical burning' smell when trying to turn it over. Could this point to a problem with the starter motor or is it more serious? If it is the starter - am I better to try to fix or buy a new one?

    Cheers,

This is perfectly normal on a Series 3. The electrical burning smell is from a build-up of static when a Series 3 driver's Terylene slacks brush across that lovely plastic interior.
Or it could be the wiring harness behind the dash.
I'd elimenate the slacks before ripping out the dash though.

With regard to the sarter motor, if it needs to be repaired, then do it because money is money. Also check the ignition switch and the solenoid.
