Thread: Freelander rear door

    Default Freelander rear door

My wife has been out shopping and the back door of the freelander will not open on her return.I have managed to retrieve the ice cream and the new printer but there is no way I can open the back door. The key does nothing and I have tried locking and unlocking the doors a few times both with the key and the fob. The back window will move up and down and the rear wiper is still working.
Once before the car locked itself when we were pushing the door closed against some luggage. But that was 2 years ago and it has been fine ever since. Is there an alternative to the main dealer. We live in West London and have access to Sussex over the week end.
We would be very grateful for any help.

Does the window drop if you use the switch inside?
If it does there is a known problem of the switch in the handle failing.

If it doesn't then perhaps the window cable has broken

The window will drop and return as normal and the central locking inside is working. The two front doors lock and unlock as normal withe the key and the fob. The rear door handle has no movement . is it possible to remove the door card from inside withiout causing damage. Would I need to have a thin lever and pull it off to gain access to the inside.
    Thank you for the interest

To remove the door card without damaging it you really need to have the door open
Have you tried opening up the door handle. There are 2 screws on the underside. You may then be able to spot something obvious inside, it could well be a simple fix.

Ignore the central locking, that doesn't affect the window action.
By your description I suspect that the switch inside the rear door handle has failed, unfortunately not uncommon. You can take the handle off without opening the door. Do that and check what the "innards" are like.

How does the rear handle come off. I have tried the rear window by opening the window fully and then using the key in the lock and the window will move up and down using the key in the lock. So it looks as if the switch that works the lock itself has failed. I need to remove the handle from outside and I am nor sure how to do it. It looks like an Easter saturday afternoon job for me.
Any help would be very useful. Thank you.

Drop the window with the switch and then open the rear door.
Remove the door card and either remove or cut the inner plastic liner so that you can get to the inside of the handle.
