Default Ehaust Popping and other issues

Having a whole host of issues with my defender at the moment - electrical (fuel and temp guages not working), clutch (strange noises) and now the engine

    engine first

I'm getting some loud popping coming from my exhaust when decelerating (its probably all the time but can't hear it over the loud exhaust its pretty much straight through) I understand this is down to unburnt fuel being ignited by exhaust gasses, but what could be causing it ?

duff spark plugs ? has been 15000 miles since last changed
    HD leads?

My engine is a 3.9efi V8 runs on lpg and petrol with tublar headers and twin exhaust, burbles quite noisly at idle but dosn't pop.

    Clutch/ gearbox noise/vibration

this happens occasionally when, pressing the clutch down it sounds like its not disengaging correctly with lots of vibrations in the gear lever when going to neutral, to fix it I release the clutch and press again and the noise and vibration stops.

I'm not sure if this is related to what i thought was propshaft binding with my double cardan front prop (lots of vibration and rumble when not under load) But i changed that for a wide angle prop at the weekend, which has got rid of the high speed vibrations but not the ocasional rumble when not under load - changing gear etc.
I was going to start looking at the diffs next as a possible cause of this rumbling

Any idea's on the gearbox/clutch and or propshafts..?

    Electrical (devils work)

fuel guages not working properly, shows only half full when full then dips into empty on and off - sender ?
Temp guage - not working at all - sender again or bad earth ?

any help/idea's will be much appreciated
    Adrian

Take wire off the temp sender and earth it. Temp guage should then show full. No help on other issues sorry.

Cool I'll check the exhaust system for leaks sounds like a probable cause thanks

theres always unburnt fuel in the exhaust, even on brand new modern cars with micro managed engines. have a look on your MOT emmissions paperwork, hydrocarbons or HC ppm is the unused fuel exiting the cylinders. as youd expect its much less on modern engines with engine management, than say a 25 year old carb engine. the MOT limits reflect this.

the popping noise is secondary combustion in the exhaust. just being hot is not enough to make it happen, it needs an alternate source of oxygen after the combustion process, i.e a leak somewhere in the exhaust

popping can also be from running very lean on over run, combustion becomes so inneficient that both fuel and oxygen makes it into the exhaust manifold.

Exhaust looks like the likely culprit, I had the headers off a few months back when i replaced the starter motor so might start there, would it have to a fairly big hole to let the air in and cause the popping ? or could it be a pinhole sized hole and bloody hard to find.
i've ordered some new spark plugs too as the old ones i took out last night look pretty coked up and knackered.

Does it sort of "growl" or "groan" when this happens ? Mine does the same, it's a worn spigot bush and sometimes instead of 'just stopping', the gearbox input shaft ends up gyrating around in the bush. Since you have a lump of shaft bouncing about, it creates both noise and vibration.

As for the exhaust popping, I'd guess the mixture going weak under overrun. I've got my gas system configured to reduce the mixture under overrun to enhance engine braking (makes a bit difference). I did have it set to fully turn off the gas, but that was too harsh - I've now got it set to just weaken the mix, and I get a quiet "pfft, pfft, pfft" from the exhaust.

thanks simon, it was like a crunchy growl - sounds like the worn spigot bush could be the cause, your description matches what i was getting.
Hovever things just got a lot worse I'm unable to select high ratio now (keeps popping out of drive), not sure if its related to the above - seems more like the transfer box linkage

As for the exhaust popping, might be fixed now (fingers crossed)- found that a few of the lower header bolts had become loose somehow, the flanges were completely coked up too when i took it off - all cleaned up and replaced. unfortuantely the popping was only audable when decelerating from 30mph+ and as my truck is now a dead duck can't check it.
