I have a '95 (Mreg) 300 TDI Disco.
The brake performance has deteriorated significantly, and it seemed to go all at once. I found myself heading to a junction with diminished braking performance and the pedal was "dead hard".
I pulled the vac tube off the servo and the vac pump is sucking, but don't have a vac gauge, so don't know exactly how hard.
The vac inlet 1 way valve to the servo isn't a 1 way valve any more, I can blow through both ways.
When doing the "start the engine with the brake pedal pressed" it feels the same with the vac connected or disconnected.
I think the vac pump is doing something as when I press the brake when everything is connected up, I can hear a noise that sounds like fluid moving.
If I coast down the road at 30 mph in neutral, left foot brake whilst revving the engine with right foot, its just as bad.
So, now questions please:
1) How much of the problem is the knackered 1 way valve likely to be?
1) How hard should the vac pump suck and it there a particular engine speed to test at? I can probably get a vac gauge, or improvise.
2) Seems to me like the servo is leaking the vac away based on the sound I can hear. Are the servo's practically rebuildable?
3) Have I missed anything obvious pls?
