    Default hissing tdi 300 defender

Hi All, i have just noticed that i have a hissing sound coming from the engine, any ideas, the turbo hoses are perfect no damage, the exhaust pipe is not punctured and the hissing sound is only heard while driving and it's not continueous. It's heard when accelerating and sometimes even when engine braking. There is no power loss, exhaust manifold gasket seems fine and sound isn't heard when revving the vehicle in a stationary position.
Haven't noticed any snakes in my car either.
    Thanks

it will either be a boost leak, or an exhaust leak, past the turbo. although you say it does it under engine braking, which is strange, but i cant think of much else that can cause a hiss.

a boost leak from where can it be? engine braking i must say is not the right way to describe, it's more of when you accelerate fully then decellarate to a constant speed. but still the hissing is not continuous.
    thanks for your reply.

Check the turbo pipes are securely fastened to the intercooler and that the intercooler itself isnt leaking.

Are you sure that it's not just the whine of the turbo kicking in under acceleration that you're hearing?

    Cheers.

yes I am sure Jode. I have a boost gauge so I can tell when the turbo kicks in. And the sound isn't continuous. Haven't checked the intercooler yet.
    Thanks

Ok, how about this one from "left field", have you had your head under the bonnet with the engine running?
It could just be the bearings on the alternator making the noise as they are spun by the serpentine belt; mine does it and it is loud!

i had a hiss on my 300tdi it turned out to be a blown exhaust manifold to head gasket, the back stud had come loose and blow the gasket

My hiss was temporarily fixed by (bad move) putting britpart brake servo unit. Think off the top of my head 4x 13mm bolts and gasket. Easy fix. This servo unit was of poor quality and even using black sealant didnt solve problem for very long. Original equipment bought off ebay for 40 did! Prior to fix tested pressure output of Britpart and couldnt get it to work. The guy who is my mentor has been working on LR's for 43 years. ps, the hiss was highlighted during MOT test in UK, i never noticed it from cabin! gd luck. My car is standard right hooker!

Am so confused, the sound isn't continuous and you cannot hear it while vehicle isn't moving. And I do hear it from inside and it's quite loud. What I need to do is remove the bonnet nd ask a friend to sit on the front while I drive the car. Any volunteer?
