Today I decided to replace the transfer case on the 300tdi. The intermediate shaft leak was getting worse and there was quite a whine coming from the transfer case too.....204,000 miles on it
I've had a replacement transfer case on the bench for 6months, it came from a similar age Discovery with a juvenile 165,000 miles on it. I have stripped the casing, replaced the input bearings and re-shimmed them to suit. I also renewed the intermediate shaft O rings and collapsible spacer. The intermediate bearings looked fine as they run in gear oil anyway unlike the input bearings which are splash lubricated. I glued the intermediate shaft in with some real strong locktite to take up slight slack in the casing and reset the preload on the existing bearings. I replaced the input seal and both output seals. Hopefully no more oil leaks from there!

"Roger" passed the MOT last Friday, only one advisory OSF track rod slight play in joint. Ordered the complete rod plus both joints from Paddock and as the weather was good here I fitted it on Saturday. Measured everything up before and afterwards. Split the joints (tried the Ed China) method of two hammers but gave up and used my big fork ball joint splitter that worked fine. Things went well, job done so spent an hour or so afterwards pumping another gallon of Waxyoil into the chassis. Very pleased with the work and hopefully this one is a keeper!

And Sunday's job once I had finished fitting the rear prop with new rubber coupling and bush....was the timing belt. New genuine tensioner and idler pulleys, dayco belts and a new front cover plate again genuine.....all from Turner Engineering.

Fitted a set of 235/70 Insa Turbo Risko tyres to my D1 last weekend. Have yet to try them in their natural habitat, but seem sure footed on wet roads. Just off outside now to fit a 2nd hand sump guard I've wire brushed, rustproofed and painted on the inside. (Didn't see much point in painting the outside)
After that it's fit a new driver's side window bottom channel so i can open and close it again and then replace the original wing mounted electric aerial as the electric 'stuck to the window' thing is a total waste of time!

Dismantled the dashboard, MFU and tried to trace an electrical problem. Failed!

Done installing my new Toyo Open Country A/Ts. Went out to test them. I can say that these toyo tires are relatively smooth and not too noisy on pavement. I'm excited to take them off the road this weekend.

    Hi

Had a minor issue with smoke coming from the instrument cluster this morning. Just before the smoke came out fuel, temp and rev counter went to zero. Looks like the 20 way plug has partly melted so there must have been a short in the plug. Two fuses blew as well but I unplugged the connector and replaced the fuses and I was able to drive home with no instruments. Have ordered a replacement cluster from ebay and luckily found the Amp 16 way and 20 way connectors also on ebay so hopefully will be able to repair it soon. Anyone know if the oddometer (mileage) value is stored in ECU or is it in the dash not sure if it will read the correct milage when replaced?

    Chris
