Default 03 Freelander Td4..an occasional rattle, engine stutter and black smoke --CAUSE?

Hi all. I have an '03' reg Freelander Serengeti Td4. The car has been dealer/ competant garage serviced since new at all appropriate intervals and has now done 140,000 miles ( just to let you know its not been neglected).

From time to time when pulling away and steady throttle sometimes I am experiencing a rattle from the engine (sounds like a kid quickly dragging a stick across railings) , the engine stutters slightly and emits black smoke from exhaust. This has been happening for a while now and it is ocassional.

What is causing this? All help greatly appreciated. Thanks

I replaced all the injectors when my td4 started knocking when cold....but its worth looking at the fuel pressure sensor and plug 1st.....

Had the same problem with mine and found the common rail sensor plug corroded which is apparently a common fault . What I found on another is the cable was pinched between the inlet manifiold and the head and causing a short circuit and false pressure readings. Took a longnose pliers and twisted the sensor lugs +- 5 degrees out of line and reseated the plug a lot of times after spraying it with contact cleaner and it is now good for 6 months .
Also if you have black smoke on high revs your turbo intercooler pipes might be cracked or loose.
The best way is just check it for oil seeping out / loose clamps.

Maybe Chaser gan give you more advise.
    Hope you come right.

I know this is an old thread, but I found this whilst searching for a very similar issue with an 05 TD4 and hope my experience will help others - I was unsure of the issue until I resolved it with this help. Occasionally (at first) whilst feathering the throttle on the motorway then engine would 'rattle' a couple of times and throw out smoke, then be OK. On a 350 mile return trip after leaving motorway services (to fill up with fuel) it suddenly lost all power and went 70-60-50mph. I pulled off the road and turned the engine off and on again. The engine seemed to run OK but when I set off it rattled and the warning light on the dash came on with the same loss of power.
I tried to keep the revs high as I went downhill onto the main road and fortunately the light went off and the power came back. I was very careful to keep the revs high and the engine not under load with gentle throttle (at the time this appeared to stop the issue reoccurring) the remaining 200 miles home.
The next day I decided to take it for a run again and cautiously set off. Around 0.5 miles down the road in 4th I pressed the accelerator as if to pull away from a junction and immediatly the hollow knock/rattle happened (maybe four times) with a huge cloud of grey/black smoke with loss of power and the engine light on. After that (with quarter tank of fuel and tested on flat roads) no amount of stopping and testing would bring the power back/turn off the light. Even starting the engine after this happened was difficult, as the idle was all over when first starting. I feel I was incredibly lucky to make it home the day previously!

My OBD (non-landy) scanner wouldn't pick up any codes despite the light being on.

I picked up some Halfords contact cleaner and discovered that at some point the replacement fuel rail harness had already been fitted to my Freelander. The plug on the fuel rail sensor was a bit of a pain to get off, but I sprayed it and the sensor with contact cleaner. I also used a needle to try and bend the pins on the plug a little to make better contact.

As soon as i'd done that I started the engine. After 5 seconds the warning light went off. The power was back and the freelander was driving perfectly. Even a little diesel knocking that had been happening for a while when under load seems to have stopped too.

I had spoken to some mechanics about these symptoms and despite me suggesting the fuel rail sensor connection, none thought that explained the issue (some suggested throttle body or injectors).

Hopefully someone else will find this and save a lot of time or expense troubleshooting
