Thread: 17 year old insurance on Land Rover?

Default 17 year old insurance on Land Rover?

    Hi,

I wonder if you could help me.

I am about to turn 17, and will be doing my lessons and test as soon as possible.

Once Iíve passed my test Iíd be looking to get a Land Rover 90.

    The vehicle will be a 1986 Ė 1989 Land Rover 90.
I will be doing limited mileage (probably less than 1000 per year!)

I will be the only named driver. At age 17, having just passed my test.

Does anyone know of who'd be the cheapest for insurance?

    Many Thanks,

    Luke.

Hi Luke and welcome to the forums, and congratulations on the choice of vehicle.
Adrian Flux is a popular company amongst the LR fraternity, but I will leave it to others with more experience of 17 year olds to advise you.

Nobody can say who will be the cheapest because its down to your personal circumstances.

Best thing you can do is buy a Land Rover magazine and ring all the insurance company's up that are advertised.

If you can keep the car in a garage that will knock the price down. I'm sure other people will come along with a few tips to knock the price down.

    Flux or Footman james....

Its worth calling some others, but nobody else really comes close to those two...

Hi Luke, welcome to the Forums. Adrian Flux, Peter best, are just two, and there are quite a few out there. Good to always phone around a few and get quotes first.

Again others on here may have some further knowledge - all the best!

    Hi Luke,

Some insurance companies may reduce your premium if you complete a PassPlus course.

    hi Luke!,

Just an additional question for you all, what are the implications of driving more miles that you tell the insurance company? are you not covered at all after 1000 miles for example?

When I passed my test when I was 17, my instructor said it was no point in doing a passplus test.

Ill almost echo this...you need to get a few insurance quotes and see what it lowers the price by. The test was going to cost me something like £200 extra with my instructor. A friend recently got a quote, and yes it brought it down: but nowhere near the amount he spent getting the test . Plus lots of classic policies wont accept it anyway. Id be wary of spending much getting it done.

dont bother with passplus, i was told by footman james that it would make no difference to the quote - its a waste of money and time. i wasnt able to get insurance before i passed on a LR, but afterwards, i could only find footman james that would insure me. (this is on a 2a).

    ditto

My cousin's boy did a couple of years in a corsa as the insurance on a defender was eye wateringly high - not due to the speed but the potential destruction that something relatively big and heavy could do.

If you have any kind of farming link try pulling on the NFU's heart strings

Added to that it could take you a year to pass your test

You can get what's called a 'classic young drivers policy' with either footman and james or adrian flux because that is what I did.

    Hi Tim,

    Who was your policy with?

And do you mind me asking how much it was?

I've been looking around and the insurance costs for anything are just unrealistic.
I looked at a 1.2 punto and corsa and was quoted £4500!
It seems that even cars like that are expensive to insure.
I'd heard a few rumours of 17 year olds insuring land rovers very cheapy (in the £000's) so thought i'd look at it.
I live in a bit of a rural area anyway, so it makes sense to have something like a land rover as it would be a better all round car.
My cheapest quote so far has been £2900 for a Land Rover 90, which is alot better than £4500 for a 1.2 punto!
I'd like to know where the people i've heard driving land rovers at my age and paying more like £1000 to insure them are getting insured.
If anyone knows, let me know ......
