I would have voted for Adolf, he had the strong chance to seriously changing the country for ever had he walked up Whitehall!

But then there was no voting for enemies from within!

A good a pair of nominee candidates in my opinion on that score would be B Liar and Brown!
Given 50 years and they will probably get some sort of dubious accolade---postumously of course!

Going back to the original question, I think one of the criteria was that they must have led troops against the Brits in the field, which rules out Hitler (not sure about Thatcher!).

Ludendorff/Hindenburg would probably have got my vote. Washington's military achievements weren't really on the field of battle, the French were the ones wot won it for him, but it would have played well with the museum's donors.

I based Adolf as my selection the greatest threat, based upon my understanding that he took over total command of German Forces and ignoring the advise of his professionals.
(I suppose in the ultimo it was a good thing from our Brit perspective ), things that came to mind:-

1) Diverting Luftwaffe attacks onto London in a fit of temper, instead of continued crippling RAF airfields thus eradicating an air cover defense. Underachieved!

2) Ignoring Rommel's advise to station battle tanks as a line of defense inland of an anticipated invasion of the continent. This would have nullified initial attacks by British paratroopers in the Caen/Ranville area which in fact was extremely successful in pressing home the initial attack from behind the lines and sealing off the river from German re-reinforcement from the Pas de Calais area .
Of course there were others.

Going back to George Washington our subject, I am not so sure much is taught in UK schools these days about the War of US Independence and the events leading up the conflict 75 years before 1775.
When I was in school in the 50's & 60's it was covered in depth "ad nuseum" to me as a teen.

Washington was in the British (Royal) Army with Col Braddock sent to fight the French Indian wars in the Ohio Valley following their incursion around what is now the Pittsburgh area. In a series of attacks he lost his column, a French diplomat was killed so was Col Braddock and the fellow returned to Pittsburgh in disgrace.

Due to his experiences with guerrilla style fighting at the opposing hands of the French and Native population during the Indian Wars he was successful at giving the British forces a drubbing at Concord , and Long Island.
The battle of Monmouth NJ was a complete route of the British Army so was the surprise attack at Trenton/Princeton NJ on German mercenary units. (Crossing the Delaware River at night during Christmas period)

Some of the biggest British mistakes I recall were a decision to attack the South Savanna/Charleston and create a new front into the Georgia area landing in the area and spread out. These were mostly Scots regiments and they came up against a fierce some American Colonialist "ragbag units" who were of Scots /Irish decent! It was mass slaughter on both sides! But a disaster nonetheless!

I suppose even today what can be worse than a bunch of mad Scots and Irish back woodsmen!

This allowed British forces to be whittled away and left insufficient troops to put down the mass rebellion/attack in the Chesapeake bay area who by then had got the French naval forces on their side blocking a retreat--In short game over. A bit like a game of Chess.

If it wasn't for GW and then Gen Jackson (war of 1812) there might have been a Jack still flying in Washington although at the time Washington took his oath of office in what is now the Federal Building in downtown NY NY.
In short British monumental screw ups lost the Colonies, both in civil matters for 25 odd years and military campaigns. Plus the UK public had had enough of funding American useless military adventures against a kindred foe.

I think there is a grain of truth in that brief statement!
I also saw another brief statement yesterday in the Torygraph about the Rht Hon Edward Heath who first got the UK going into the EEC which focused on enemies from within!

Certainly from my hindsight perspective, my country of birth hitching its wagon to a dead beat horse is an act of treason when EFTA was far better alternative !
In short that is why I am on this side and not on the eastern shore side!~
