Does anyone have access to an exploded diagram of the IRD on a '98-ish Freebie? Please e-mail it to me , or tell me where on the net I can find it. I guess I should hunt down a service manual for the long run. Thanx in advance.

The reason I ask is that my stubborn Missus is going to try to get our IRD unit replaced under warranty like Ford wanted to do in the first place. It seems the warranty people are claiming that the IRD unit is not part of the transmission. A lawyer from her work reckons we have to get a statement from them saying this, and a statement from someone else saying that the IRD is part of the trans. So I'd like a detailed diagram of the unit to see what the fuss is about. Personally I think that anyone who sells warranties for 2nd hand off-road vehicles with 90 000 k's on the clock deserves all he gets.
Anybody else done this?
no but the ird is the transmisson it reduces the drive given from the gear box and transfers it rear wards
warranty people are scared its am expensive part .... very expensive ,,full of **** it is transmission![]()
ird = INTERMEDIATE REDUCTION DRIVE

Just been through this - bought a Freebie last April (98 Di) and have just had to fork out £1300 for IRD and VCU. The warranty that came with the car hadn't been upgraded to 4x4 (should have read the small print I guess).

What's all this fuss about the 9th of November?
It's definately part of the transmission ! take it out and you've got no drive to either front wheel even (or the rears obviously !). However it's _not_ part of the gearbox, which is where the small-print could get you. If it says transmission and not just 'gearbox' though then they should cover it.
I removed and had mine rebuilt by a specialist about 14 months ago now, it's definately required to get any drive to the wheels. Take them to the cleaners for it, I'll back you up with any evidence if required. There's some pics of when I stripped mine on here -

In the 2nd picture you can see the sump (on the right) and the gearbox at the back. The hole by the rear part of the subframe is where the IRD squeezes in, it houses the front diff and transmits the drive back to both front wheels. It also has the pinion drive output on the back which drives to the prop, which in turn via the VCU drives the rear diff.
HTH, Simon. PM me if you want any more info or help.
As a new member who is about to fork out £2000 for a new VCU and IRD and 4 new tyres(!) is this a common problem with Freelanders? I have a 2L XDI 1999, 56,000 miles, regularly serviced, and has eaten tyres since I bought it. According to the local dealership ( Hunters Derby) they are "unware" of the problem. Whilst searching the inertnet this is obviously not the case and Landrover are aware of such faults. Why do dealerships treat their customers with such contempt? Is it because I am a"mere" woman who openly admits that she knows little about cars? I must admit to being completely stupid in paying £19,000 for a car which has been very unreliable and extremely costly since.Originally Posted by DirtnScuba
But they're great cars when they're working well ! in actual fact very few suffer from the problems with VCU/IRD - I'd even go so far as to say that there's not a single case when the VCU has actually failed. I'd asked them how they know it's failed on yours, and why .. lots of people (including a tranmission specialist) told me my VCU was broken and that's what lunched the IRD, but they were so very wrong.
Unfortunately the IRD rear output is quite weak, and it seems many of the early units were badly assembled with too much 'backlash' on the shafts. Since a decent rebuild mine has been perfect. 56k miles is bad luck, mine got to 110k before giving up - and even then it was only the rear drive output pinion that was mashed, the rest was OK and only needed new bearings where the bits of teeth from other gears had got in and damaged them. 300 quid for the rebuild of that.
Hope you get it sorted soon and can get back to being a happy freelanderer.
Simon.
Thank for the words of comfort! I am in need of them this evening as my husband and I are now £2,228.82p lighter! It was nice to be back driving the car again but it has seriously dented my faith in buying a British car again. Even more worryingly, he has mentioned trading it in for a Defender. I am going to contact Landrover regarding the appalling attitude of Hunters, the main dealership in Derby. I think they should be made aware of the crass statements their staff are making. Luckily, I have a much friendlier Landrover garage who are very honest about the Freelanders often dodgy reputation.
