    Default Ticking Discovery

Hello everyone,me and hubby are quite new to Landies.Discovery 1995 plus a lovely 1985 90.The problem is with the Disco. When accelerating there is a ticking sound. It's been going on about three weeks and doesn't seem to be getting any worse. The engine in the Disco is a 300TDi.We've tried lots of different ways to find out what it could be.I'm sure I read an article somewhere about this problem. Please help,it's driving me nuts!

Is it a load clunky noise more than a tick? Does it only happen on accelaration, and not when cruising? Does it happen when you turn the steering? A front inner CV joint will click on accelaration, but do Disco's have these? Can anyone confirm this?

Hi Stephen,no it's not a clunky sound. It kind of sounds like some kind of tappit rattle. As the disco gets heated,it really gets going. It's more noticable at higher revs.A non-land rover owner suggested that the cylinder head gasket is away, there are no symptoms of this.

    Hmmm........

    Does it have hi-milage?

You could get your local garage to do a compression check. That way if there is a gasket failure, it would show up without the engine being taken to bits.

Have you checked the tappets? My V8 rattles a little when under load and cold. I have put this down the a worn hydraulic cam tappets. It is much better now I have changed the oil, and goes away when it warms up.

Yes,she's high miles(119,000)but aren't all Landies? She had an engine rebuild in March 2002,The previous owner tried to run the engine without water?!The last oil change was 6,000 miles ago.I'll take her down to the local garage for a compression check, just to be on the safe side.I can't find anything in the Haynes about tappets on a 300TDi.The tip about your V8 oil change could prove useful, mate,so thanks.

Next time you hear that ticking, try putting slight pressure on low/high gear transfer gearlever with your hand, pull it fully to your right towards steering wheel, then see if ticking continues.....

    Let me know what happens

Dear Old Fart, tried what you suggested, grating noise! No change in ticking noise. I was reading some of the other threads last night. The New Year Bunk house sounds like a lot of fun. We're off to Berwick upon Tweed in our caravan for the Hogmany holiday with the ticking Disco.Good to hear you're a caravan fan too.

Thanks for the offer of space in your field, mate. Can't come out to play up there this time, but could well be up for it any other time. Sorry to hear your butane froze,we'll be taking the propane with us now for sure!!!!!HO,hum, back to the Disco, she's been looked at and prodded and she's still hanging on to her secret.Oil is getting changed on Friday,so I'll see what happens then.Afriend locally, suggested that it could be that I've put crappy diesel in her.I would not do this intentionally, got any more ideas anyone? We suspect this friend only runs petrol engines by the way, that would account for his sort of "pinking" theory!!!

Are you hearing the ticking when the vehicle is stationary or only on the move?

If your only hearing it while on the move then you may want to check the front prop shaft U/J's. This will create a ticking noise if one of them is warn and requires replacing.

I don't know what happened there maybe a PC gremlin. Thanks for your ideas I'm going to check out the fan theory tomorrow as soon as it's light.No-one thought of that thanks Yug I' get the mechanic to check the u/j on the prop shaft for wear when she's away to the garage on Friday.I don't think it@s a prop shaft problem becuase it only ticks when under load or acceleration.Still, who can say I really like the new selection of smileys,by the way they add something to the writing.I've got a BIG problem with the rear sun-roof------------you know what I'm going to say don't you all?_______________ yep, it's leaking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!hubby is getting me and the dog a shower cap each for Christmas................ The weather has been a wee bit wet,and now the dog is having a shower each time she's in the Disco............she[the dog]then shakes herself and I get wet too.Iwouldn't mind that much if it was only the pooch getting wet she loves water the colder the better. I'll sign off for the moment.Regards from the lucky owner of the peeling, leaking, ticking Disco.........................

I don' know what happened to my reply. It seems to have vanished: The disco is away to the mechanic this morning.I checked the fan cowling and needless to say it wasn't that, but thanks for the suggestion,Yug.I'm not sure about the u/js on the prop shaft, Budgie, but hopefully the boys at the oil-slick place will check that out.Just a matter of waiting now.The ticking and dash-peeling have been over-shadowed this past few days by the leaking rear sun-roof. I seem to have stemmed the flow, though [or it isn't raining as hard here].Well that's all for now, from the lucky owner of the peeling, leaking, ticking Disco
