    Default 300TDi Modified Timing Belt

In 1996 I bought a brand new 300TDi Disco, at the time I really liked it up until the timing belt failed at just 14K miles and less than 18 months old. I had a real fight with Landrover to pay up for it and then 3 months later the injection pump failed, again I had a real struggle to get any help from Landrover.

Soon after I sold the Disco and to be honest I always missed it. I now have a very nice Mercedes as my main car but have ended up with a 1995 Disco 300TDi as a 'play thing' and again I really like it.

I don't want the same to happen to this one!! I gather there was a modification to the timing belt gear on these engines. Can anybody tell me how to tell if mine has been done? From what I have found engines after VIN WA748935 have the modification. My VIN is SALLJGMF7MA133087, so I presume I am looking at the last 8 numbers, I wonder if Bearmach have made a typo error and that should be MA748935, either way mine was an early one and should have had the mod but how can I tell?

this may help premature t/belt failure discovery v.i.n numbbers from a landrover bulletin dated 7/1/98 ,lj186941 to lj200000 /lj517721 to lj558898 /lj700000 to lj748935 if your disco had the mod done at a main dealers it should have a yellow mark on the timeing case .

Jim i think the only way to check is to remove the timing cover
Or try to find the full service history if you can
    2002 Discovery TD5 ES
    1996 Discovery 300tdi
    1992 Discovery 200tdi sold
    1982 SeriesIII 88" Hardtop Sold

There were two different mod kits, one was just the pulleys and tensioner and (i think) the timing cover, the second kit also included the timing belt housing and a few brackets for around that area.

Zeus Engineering do a timing gear set, which supposedly improves low end torque as well
