diesel into petrol tank

just back from a trip down south to visit family. whilst down there i was driving my aunts car, a megane scenic. at the end of my stay i thiught i'd do the decent thing and fill it with petrol. my cousin gave my a run to manchester airport in the same car. on the way home he broke down having driven about 80 miles since i filled it. my uncle was on the phone blaming me for filling it with diesel,despite my protests that i didn't and don't even use diesel myself as i drive a petrol v8 he's not convinced.typically i have no record of the purchase as i paid cash.

if i had put derv in what would be the results? why did it do 80 odd miles before breaking down? can someone fill me with knowedge so i have more of a counter arguement.

reminds me of the saying "you can choose your friends, but you can't choose your family"

wellseeing as a Petrol Pump Nozzle is smaller then a Diesel one i thin you would have quite a job getting it in, thats why you only ever see petrol in diesels (never understand how people can do it to a TD5 Defender though)

well thats what i thought, but when i quized the man at a filling station he said some cars (petrol) have larger fillers than others so a diesel filler may fit. so i was no better off. i don't know about a megane scenic though.

Unleaded fillers are smaller generally to help people to avoid putting in leaded petrol during the early days of catalyst conversters.
I'm not sure that diesel nozzels are necessarily all larger though, or colour coded. It's not impossible that the station didn't get diesel in its bulk tank of course.
And does it really have diesel in the tank, it could be the garage trying it on too.

Wouldn't of thought it would of driven smoothly for 80 miles, but i aint gonna try it ti find out.

It would run if the Petrol was in a greater ratio, but would smoke a lot.

As Baz says, Unleaed nozzles were to stop you putting Leaded fuel in a Cat, it destroys them.

If you had put Diesel in,I doubt it would have got 80 miles and broken down, it would run rough straight away. We use Diesel/ Petrol mix from wrong fill ups in our Pickup, saves throwing it away, just top it up with Petrol.
