Common fault, the injector pump is worn. There are a couple of fixes, first is to have the pump rebuilt.Second is to conect a coolant temp sensor to the plug but not screw it in,third is arelay arrangement which powers up the in tank pump and glows every time you key on.
To prove your injector pump is at fault, get the engine up to temp then switch it off.Run a cold hose pipe over the pump for a few mins, then try starting the engine. If it fires right up then the pump is worn - it usually is.

That's the same test for the VW and Audis, that we do, JON. The wear in the pump reduces when you cool the pump. ( as you know )

We had a batch of them last year, dunno why. Low Sulphur Fuel, I suppose.

    hi there

what condition is your battery in? I was all set to do the third option mentioned above and connnect the relay to make the glow plugs come on every time as mine had been a pain in the neck to start when hot for about a year, two years = but the battery started to act up and would be okay to start after a day leaving it but if you left it for more than a day it would not start at all - totally flat! so bought a new battery and hey presto never had any bother with starting when hot since! ;-)

worth a try - was told that over time the batterys only run at about 75% charge and when it drops below this, starts to cause starting problems/

it's a 98 although was re-engined in 02 with later engine (going by oil filter)

is this a sensor only to activate cold starting or is it the main temp sender for guage ?

ECU reads the coolant temp sensor and adjusts the engine idle to suit from cold.

From memory it's the main temperature sender.

If broken it'll sustitute readings itself.

Best idea would probably be to plug it in and see if it flags faults and take it from there.

    HTH,

    Jim

hi, i have seen those kits on ebay, they look fine, are they regarded as a proper fix ? i am thinking of getting a diesel 38a myself and looking in the manual it gives different pump timing for vehicles with low or higher mileage, could this be something to do with pump wear perhaps.
    cheers, ian.

Not really a proper fix,but in the real world it works and is cheap. It just fools the EDC into thinking the engine is cold and runs the pump, glows and gives more pump advance.

Check all the height sensors are still connected, and that the air springs are still inflated. If thats in place and the compressor is in working order then you need to stick it on Testbook or similar to see what has upset it.
EAS can be tricky to diagnose just from a set of symptoms, after basic checking it might be quicker/cheaper to get it looked at by an indy.
    Good luck,cheers Jon.
