Sometimes a broken brakeswitch underneath the pedal was the culprit ??

This happens on my disco when there is an interuped feed from an ABS sensor as all 3 sysems use these

we had exactly the same problem, although ours was intermittent (also we did check the brake lights first) - took it to the LR garage this morning and was dreading a big bill as I read stories on the internet of having vehicles rewired, and engines replaced with problem reoccuring costing owners hundreds of pounds.
Engineer knew exactly what the problem was
He connected the computer to check it was what he though and then replaced the brake light switch and reset the fault warning thingy
£5.15 for the switch/£45 for the diagnostic check/ plus VAT so just under £60 took him 15 mins max.
What a relief I was expecting a lot more
