Differences in s111 gearboxes

Hi All

Would a gearbox from a 6 cylinder s111, fit into an 4 cylinder 88"

are they the same box?

and whilst i am at it - is there any difference in the suffix's too? - is there a stronger one or a weaker suffix??

I don't know anything about the 6 cyl, but I presume it used the same box as I've not heard of another box. The parts manual mentions differences for the Stage 1 V8 but I haven't seen anything about 6 cyl.


There are differences between suffixes.

Suffix A was the first box, followed by B then C then D.

Suffix D is supposed to be the better box, and has a lot of differences to the first ones. The 3/4 synchro unit is different on the D to the others (I think A,B and C all share the same) The reverse idler shaft is also improved for the later boxes, the gears are all different on the Suffix D box.

But you can swap out any box with any other suffix box with no major problems.

The boxes are the same. Suffix D is said to be the strongest as it was designed to handle the increased power of the 5mb engines. I'm sure someone will be along shortly to tell you which bits make it the strongest

I think the 2.6 gearbox is the same but has a different bell housing, which requires a partial strip down to replace.

Suffix A-C gear boxes are all pretty similar. D and E boxes are similar, but have ECM gears, different input pinions, 3rd/4th gear synchor units and reverse gear selector shafts. They are a fair bit stronger than the earlier units.

Snagger when did the Suffix E appear? I've seen you mention it a couple of times but can't find any reference to it in the parts catalogue or on suppliers sites?

Synchromesh was first introduced on the prefix 'S' series IIa boxes, but there weren't many of them

IIRC suffix E is a factory rebuild which is basically a suffix A box with suffix D innards but the reverse idler is an oddball having the plain bronze bush but the gear teeth of a roller bearing reverse idler.

My suffix D is stamped on edge of transfer case. But I don't think they all are.
